After reading about both the heroic Beowulf and what Emerson’s ideas of what a hero is, I truly believe that Emerson would consider Beowulf to be a hero to a certain extent. This is because Beowulf has qualities that Emerson considers heroic: such as having a warlike attitude towards evil, being confident (sometimes too confident), not worrying about the difficulty or safety of his task, and being unaffected in his pursuit of vanishing evil. He says he will defeat Grendel because Grendel is killing off innocent civilians who Beowulf wants to protect. This is one of the most important qualities Emerson describes in a Hero.
