Improved Essays
At the age of ten years old I began to show interest in the sport known as basketball. I began playing basketball to pass time, increase physical exercise, as well as spend more time with my younger brother. As time passed I found myself playing basketball more often, at some point on a daily basis. Years pass and it is now time for high school, many of the other children that had seen me play at the park encouraged me to try out for the girls’ varsity basketball team at my school, I wasn’t sure that I’d make but I decided to test my luck. With hard work and determination I made the final cuts onto the team as the only freshman. Throughout the season I worked hard with Coach Cushing to improve my game and attempt to gain a natural . Time comes for me to return to tryouts and I do, and due to my hard work and determination I made the team. Another season passes, except this time we make it to the second round of playoffs! I also leave the season with an award for most improved player and eagerness for the next season. It’s now junior year and the team has lost four of it’s starting seniors, our coach is worried for the fate of the team and that this season may be mainly rebuilding, but little did he know that we would be successful in making it to the second round of playoffs once again with the same record as the past season. As the only junior on the team I was successful in becoming the team’s starting center even though I am 5’5”. I managed to balance a roster of challenging classes, including two AP courses, and maintaining an impressive 4.0 gpa. I am now a senior and looking forward to possibly becoming the team captain. Becoming apart of this team has taught me lessons about teamworks, such as working together in order to improve, as well as other life lessons that I look forward to applying later on in my

My senior year could have not started any better. On July 30th, 2015 I get a call from Coach Brock Hayes from Louisiana College offering me a scholarship to play at the college level. Ever since I was small, I always dreamed about playing college football and it finally came to reality. Fall camp was getting ready to start, and I was so excited to get my senior season started. I put in so much work and effort to get into the position I was in, so I was not going to let my team down.…

I had expected there to be an empty court but instead, I would play with a team from a local school. At first, I thought that I would do terrible, but to my surprise, my hard work with the ball paid off. My dribbling skills had gotten much better, and during the two weeks that I practiced with the team, I improved my shot. When we got back home to Atlanta, I continued to practice and for the first time, I beat my friend at on-on-one on Labor Day weekend. Now, I still have one goal remaining.…

Our attitude led to us hitting a losing streak, until we played Cleveland Football Club, the 3rd highest ranked team in the mid-west region, we ended up losing to the team by one in a 2-3 game. This game gave us hope, we ended up playing teams hard again and winning most of the second half of our season. By the end of the season the team ended up falling apart, some players left to go to one team, some to another, I however ended up being the only person going to Cleveland Football Club. I went to the tryouts where I felt very comfortable because I had played on the same team as most of the guys there back at Brunswick travel. After three tryout practices, I found my spot on the team being one of the few who ended up making it onto the…

Therefore, this was a team of small freshmen and sophomores playing against mostly juniors and seniors at the varsity level in one of the most talented high school conferences in the state. We finished the season 1-15, most of which were pretty tough losses but we worked hard and left it all on the field every game and that in the end is all that matters. The most prevalent memory was after the last game all the players were pretty upset about how it went but our coach ended our last huddle with, “We came into this season knowing it would be challenging and we worked hard from start to finish and I think we ended this season better than we started, which means that next year is gonna be a pretty good…

If someone told the middle school me that I was going to lead the basketball team as a captain for three years in a row I would’ve never believed them. But after living through it, I am more than grateful that it got to be me. After having three different coaches, winning the MVP award all three years, and having every girl on the team look up to me by my senior year, it has truly been a blessing and I cannot fathom that it has come to an end. Not that I had to carry the team, but I wanted to carry the team for me. I did this because I knew that was the only way that any of the girls would start trusting each other.…

You might not think basketball could help me academically; but it has. Leading up to this basketball game, academically, I was quite different than who I am today. Prior to this game, I did little talking to people that intimidated me, such as teachers, mostly I was just shy. However, after speaking with so many people that I did not know following the game, it has all changed. From that point on, I was brave and unafraid to communicate with teachers.…

I felt that all my hoped and dreams in this world had been crushed by one decision. Soon after the first Junior Varsity practice I was no longer upset but motivated. I thought how lucky I was to be given an opportunity to play a game at any level and that I have a chance to help redeem the team from last year. This year I changed my mindset from losing to be improving each day. I put so much time and effort into a sport that I love and was going to play with as much heart as possible.…

The season was off to a rough start before it even started; our team was very inexperienced because we graduated thirteen seniors and five other players quit. A majority of the players were two so we were starting from square one. Nonetheless, I was optimistic and determined. As the only senior, and one of three upperclassman, I had been playing the longest and was determined that I would be able to lead the team to greatness. I was disappointed when we did not, but I did not let it stop me from trying.…

Never in a million years would I have dreamed of making varsity as a freshman, especially for a team that had just won back-to-back state championships. Throughout middle school, I had to overcome adversity associated with being a “science nerd.” When people started to discover my academic aptitude, I was labeled a “nerd” who couldn’t be athletic. I wasn’t about to let this stereotype define me, so I strove to invalidate it. Since I joined volleyball two years after most of my peers, I was put on the “B-team” throughout junior high.…
