I can’t lie, there isn’t very often that I look at a batting average and wonder who the mastermind behind all of this is. Though, I have always wondered how they go about in deciding which players deserve these awards and what I discovered is rather interesting. It basically runs like a borda count for each award. For instance, in deciding who deserves most valuable player award each of the people on the BBWAA ranks their preferences in order of one through ten, with one obviously being their top preference. Each first place vote receives fourteen points. From second place through tenth place they receive points of 9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1 (BBWAA.com, 2015). The technical definition is Wins Above Replacement but basically what that means is how valuable is one player to his team. This takes the Win Shares concept but puts more depth into it. WAR = (Batting Runs + Base Running Runs +Fielding Runs + Positional Adjustment + League Adjustment +Replacement Runs) / (Runs Per Win) (Fangraphs, 2015). Now we’re getting warmer. This is a concept that can be easily voted upon. This takes several aspects such as runs batted in, runs scored, how many runs a player allowed in the field, plus much more. It also takes into account how many runs are allowed when the player has to sit for the day and the replacement takes over. Though there are flaws within the system (as there is in any system) this is something that voters have to take into
