Why Is Antacids At Neutralizing Hcl

Improved Essays
The purpose of today’s lab was to determine how effective antacids are at neutralizing HCl. This experiment required us to place 3 antacids tablets into 3 Erlenmeyer flasks. Next we were required to add 50.00 mL of 0.500M HCl and five drops of phenolphthalein. Finally, we needed to titrate NaOH into the flasks. Each antacid brand required a different amount of NaOH in order for it to be completely titrated. The data collected from the experiment allowed each group to calculate the cost effectiveness of each brand of antacid. To do so we were required to calculate how many moles of HCl were neutralized by one antacid tablet. Next we were required to calculate how many moles could be neutralized by one bottle of a certain antacid; to do this

Reduction involves increasing the number of carbon hydrogen bonds by adding hydrogen across a double or triple bond which results in an increase in electron density at the carbon atom. Organic functional groups containing double and triple bonds which undergo reduction are unsaturated. The reduction of the double bond by addition of hydrogen atoms results in the product being fully saturated. Metal hydride reducing agents that have different reactivities toward specific functional groups are commonly used in chemical reductions.…

For this experiment, a few scientists are researching how different flavors/colors of sports drinks effect the amount of red 40 dye in each drink. The independent variable in the experiment is the flavors of Gatorade (a brand of sports drinks) used, while the dependent variable is the concentration of dye the sports drinks contain. The constant variable is the spectrophotometer, the amount of liquid used, and the same type of cuvette. The controlled variable is only using water. In order to determine which drink would have the greatest concentration of red 40 dye, the scientists must first understand what it actually is.…

In this experiment, identifying the acids, bases, or neutrality of the unknown substance in a specific set are used to find the actual substances. The following sets of substances could have been assigned: Set 1 - Silver nitrate (AgNO3), Manganese(II) nitrate (Mn(NO3)2), Barium nitrate (Ba(NO3)2), Hydrochloric acid (HCl), Sodium Hydroxide (NaOH); Set 3 - Silver nitrate (AgNO3), Barium nitrate (Ba(NO3)2), Hydrochloric acid (HCl), Sulfuric acid (H2SO4), Sodium Hydroxide (NaOH); Set 4 - Silver nitrate (AgNO3), Lead (II) nitrate (Pb(NO3)2), Hydrochloric acid (HCl), Ammonia (NH3), Water (H2O). From the substances above Hydrochloric acid (HCl) is the stronger acid, and Sulfuric acid (H2SO4) and Lead (II) nitrate (Pb(NO3)2 are the weaker acids. If the substance is not an acid nor a base, the substance is neutral. In each set there were three neutral compounds, one acid, and one…

Visual comparison of the available solid and aqueous compounds to the unknown was done first so as to eliminate unnecessary testing. A 30.0 g/mL solution of the unknown was made in a beaker by dissolving 1.000 g of the unknown in 30.0 mL of distilled water. Before weighing out 1.000 g of the unknown, the scale was zeroed out with a piece of weighing paper (square cut-out of normal paper) on it. Using a scoopula, 1.000 g was the compound was carefully placed on the weighing paper and measured to exactly 1.000 g. These same measurements and procedures were used when solutions of calcium chloride and nitric acid were created using separate beakers. Portions of each solution were then poured into test tubes (exact measurements were not necessary for this step).…

When hydrochloric acid was added to the unknown and known solutions, both resulted in no reaction. This also occurred when potassium hydroxide was added to both of the solutions. Barium chloride was then added to the two solutions, which resulted in a cloudy white precipitate from both of the solutions. A cloudy white precipitate also formed when calcium nitrate and ammonium nitrate were added to both the unknown and known solutions. These reactivity tests were conducted in order to establish how the unknown compound would react with acids, bases, and salts.…

This was necessary because hydrochloric acid helped separate the cations, which is what was needed in order to distinguish the lead or silver from the calcium or barium. It did this because the chlorine ion of HCl was able to bond with silver or lead, leaving the other cation in the liquid solution that was decanted and set aside for Part B.1 In Step 5, the sample with either silver or lead was heated in a water bath. This step was essential as heating the solution broke any ionic bonds within the…

The purpose of this experiment was to determine the presence of the analgesic compounds acetaminophen, aspirin, caffeine, and salicylamide in the over-the-counter medications Anacin, Bufferin, Excedrin, and Tylenol. Thin-layer chromatography (TLC) was used to analyze solutions of the medications; the TLC plates were visualized using ultraviolet light and iodine staining. The ten micropipets used to spot the TLC plates were made from glass capillary tubes by heating the middle of each tube in a Bunsen burner flame, pulling the ends of the tube away from each other so that the middle was stretched into a thinner tube, and breaking the cooled capillary in the middle to form two micropipets. Two silica-gel TLC plates were spotted with solutions…
