Abstract
Is it ethical to harm animals by performing experiments on them in order to provide research that will later benefit people? This research paper analyzes BLANK Number of journals and their opinions on animal testing. The two major viewpoints on animal testing are; animal testing is immoral, or animal testing is ethically acceptable. Both sides provide strong examples and reasonable arguments to support their opinions.
The Ethics of Animal Testing The topic of whether it is morally acceptable to place the well-being of humans above that of animals has been disputed for …show more content…
Or is it only an unnecessary regulation?’. Many believe that animal testing does little to help medical research and consequently destroys many animals’ quality of life. Major cases of animal cruelty that occur in animal testing facilities include: leaving animals in cages with little or no social interaction with other animals, limited or total lack of going outdoors, and general lab conditions such as bright and infrequent lighting, not to mention the procedures the animals withstand on a daily basis. These conditions often psychologically damage the animals "’With the EU closing its doors to animal-tested cosmetics, the beginning of the end of global cosmetics cruelty is within our grasp,’ commented Troy Seidle of Humane Society International” (Europe Agri, 2013). Europe has taken a major step to end animal testing; therefore, cases of animal cruelty (in Europe) will decrease.
Benefits of Animal Testing Another point of view argues that animal testing can be considered by some; necessary and morally acceptable. 60 percent of the population of U.S and Canada believe it is ethical to place the well-being of humans over animals’. For example, medications to help cancer patients first had to be tested on animals. Brooks (2012) proclaims that these cures,”... were developed only because researchers were able to carry out experiments on animals” (Brooks, 2012).
