He used all methods to reduce the price of oil to his consumers as rebates. He gained many profits and his competitors were crushed one by one. Most of his business were fair business competition. Before his death he gave half of his fortune to medical foundations, Churches, and universities. For Carnegie he donated $350,695,654 during his life…
The Gospel of Wealth has become a way of life and the fundamental screen of society. The Gospel of Wealth has given a way for businessmen to help the less fortunate. Through ways such as building libraries and through “maximum prosperity” (Document I). Andrew Carnegie was also known as a “robber baron”. He founded the Carnegie Steel Company These things helped increase pay for workers and a way to be educated in order to grow and become successful.…
“The first man gets the oyster the second man gets the shell” This means that if you are the first one to do it no one else can take that from you. Andrew Carnegie impacted the citizens of the United States of America because he was the first one to manufacture steel in the United States, and donated his money to educational and scientific institutions. Andrew carnegie was born in 1835 Dunfermline, Fife, Scotland his parents William Carnegie and Margaret Morrison Carnegie Ambitious for her two sons, Andrew and younger his brother Thomas, she organized a family move to the United States in 1848, when Andrew was thirteen. The Carnegies settled in Allegheny, Pennsylvania, where they had relatives and attempted to rebuild the family’s fortunes.…
When Andrew Carnegie entered the steel price and production pools he quit when it ran out and kept the tariff of steel high. Carnegie bought out his rivals whenever a depression hit that allowed for the company to profit and monopolizing his industry and in 1901, J.P Morgan gained Carnegie Steel and built U.S Steel. In his time Andrew Carnegie came to represent the entire steel-making complex of men and decisions just like how John D. Rockefeller personified Standard Oil . Of course despite the role these influential individuals played into contributing to the development to the American culture, people would attack big business men like these two corporate owners not for…
While in many cases he was a hero, showing the reality of the American dream and being able able to make it from nothing. It also shows the ideas the business leaders had toward the working class and the ideas the working class the had about the leaders. To the working class Carnegie was just like everyone else, trying to make an extra buck. If that came from cutting wages or trying to stop Labor Unions he would do what he could to make the most amount of money possible. With this it really depends at how you look at Andrew Carnegie.…
Although far outclassing many other colorful characters in American history, in the present age, Carnegie’s philosophy is also greatly admired and Carnegie’s philanthropy…
He elaborates on his idea that our economy would increase it’s worth if the rich distributed their money to the poor. The problem is not the inequality or the wealthy, but the rich not using their money appropriately, Carnegie believed. Thus, if the rich are able to give back…
According to Carnegie, wealth can be distributed in three ways, first passing it down to the following family generation. Carnegie’s opinion on leaving money to the family was not a wise choice not just because the family may not be deserving of the money or it being a sense…
Andrew believed in the even distribution of wealth, “the duty of the man of wealth (is to) set an example of modest [...] to produce the most beneficial results for the community” (Doc M). He was also a person who donated lots of money to charity and even tried to make up for his mistakes by funding $1,450,000 to the Carnegie Corporation which is now a foundation that gives out “about $100,000,000 a year, most of it to education” (Doc N). Carnegie’s philanthropy is a good reason why Carnegie was a hero because he believed that the rich should be giving money so it is distributed evenly instead of giving all the inheritance to a family member. This way, the community would strive more as a whole. He also donated a lot a money that helped others towards their education and access to reading in free public…
The absence of a proper home environment also speaks for his family’s financial situation. Their severe economic status could also explain their children’s lack of an education. As an…
Industrialist Andrew Carnegie’s article “Wealth,” later known as “The Gospel of Wealth,” was published in the North American Review in June of 1889. In his writing, he rejected the traditional goals of charity. He depended less on carefully discriminating between the “worthy” and “unworthy” recipients than on attacking the root causes of unequal distributions of wealth itself. Carnegie believed that wealth should be invested in such worthwhile ventures for the wellbeing of the public being rather than using money senselessly and ineffectively. With regard to Carnegie’s belief, he indicates that the estates of the dead millionaire, or so to say, should be taxed increasingly so that the tax can go towards helping the public.…
Andrew Carnegie believed that it was the duty of the wealthy to help the poor. His idea of help came in the form of opportunities “to help those who will help themselves.” The wealthy would provide opportunities, not direct aid, to the poor; these opportunities could take the forms of “free libraries, parks, and means of recreation by which men are helped in body and mind; works of art, certain to give pleasure and improve the general condition of the people.” However, these opportunities did not really help the poor.…
Andrew Carnegie shouldn’t be considered a hero because his selfish, ambitious, and extreme competitive attitudes had made a negative impact on others. A hero is someone who helps people who is in need of help and someone who gives to the poor and doesn’t spend money on unnecessary things that aren’t important. A hero is also somebody who has good leadership. Carnegie had a steelmaking company, In Carnegie’s time in the northeast of about the 1900s. Carnegie’s selfish attitude shows that he had a negative impact on some people.…
It seems to me that someone must do the dirty work and the difficult jobs that the benefactors are certainly not taking part in, yet Carnegie tells men to aim for the highest. In some ways it seems as if he is trying to hold society as a whole to a higher level by telling the men of the lowest tear to work towards their goals and achieve greatness. I found Carnegie to be a combination of persuasive and self-serving. In many instances his writing seemed to speak to a certain audience one that has the money to make change and the possibility transform society as a whole. However at the same time in was self-serving in that his speech really is not directed towards everyone.…
Andrew Carnegie was known for “destroying the unions”, which made the name robber baron for himself (Hewitt, Lawson). Although he was destroying the unions, he also gave back as well, which caused more of a dispute because people were concerned with why he destroyed something, then wanted to give back so much. People in this time period should have accepted and welcomed the wealth in hands of few because as we discussed previously he earned the money himself, and even though he was one of the wealthiest of this time period and had a notorious name for himself, he also excelled in philanthropy. Carnegie makes a valid point in his Gospel of Wealth where he states, “Those with great wealth must be socially responsible and use their assets to help others” (Gospel of Wealth). The people of this time period should have accepted the wealth in his hands because years later he gave his money back in huge bulks, to educational matters to share with the country, which states that they should have accepted the wealth in few hands because he ends up giving his wealth back in the long run (Hewitt, Lawson).…
