In their article "Is America More Divided by Race or Class?", Sean McElwee, Jesse Rhodes, and Brian Schaffner discuss whether the election of Donald Trump as the 45th President of the United States was influence more by race or class. Specifically, they use research to dissect how race and class influence political affiliation. Donald Trump being elected was influenced by the intersection of class and race because when people began to look into the demographics that voted for him they found that working class whites propelled him in polls which made people question whether his victory was a result of the economic condition in the United States. Others argued that his victory was solely based on his ignorant comments about race, but the fault…

Combining race and ethnicity to resolve racial stigmas, or ethnorace, does not disrupt the black/white binary. I believe the black/white binary is something that will always be present in America. People of different ethnicities and races, coalesced or not, will always be treated differently, whether it be because of their skin color, other physical features, cultural origin, or nativism. Ethnorace is a term used for someone who has assimilated into a different society than their ancestry, in this case the American society, by being raised with American cultural values and a Christian religion. Despite their parents and ancestors’ race and ethnicity as African, Asian, Latino, etc., ethnorace allows this person to classify themselves as an American…

While reading The Raisin in the Sun and The Help, I noticed how things are so different when it comes to opposite races other than Caucasian. Today we still have problems with this, but it is not as bad. Division is created when people see others as threats. One will see you there selves and those around them the correct way to be, and when they go out into the world and meet people with different values and ways of living they will not know how to interact with them. Creating different labels for people is not what divides us; the division appears when those labels are the only words people grasp. this passage made me think about some police officers mentality when it comes to minorities. In many instances, kids have to grow up with a different kind of strength.…

I believe the best way to improve race relations in America is to teach and encourage humility in children's lives and as adults. I find that many people are intolerant to not only cultural differences from their peers but also economic differences like whether or not a person is a middle-class citizen. Most Americans will say they don’t care what class a person is considered to be in as long as they are trying and contributing their share of work and they also don’t care that a person may dress or eat differently than they do as long as they are able to make sense of it. The problem with both of these situations is that they all come back to the initial person that is making a judgment based off of their views when it does not matter what…

We have changed drastically in the past One hundred years. To say that there was segregation between people of color and whites is mind blowing to some of my generation. The definition of race is as follows “A group of people identified as distinct from other groups because of supposed physical or genetic traits shared by the group. Most biologists and anthropologists do not recognize race as a biologically valid classification, in part because there is more genetic variation within groups than between them.” This is something that is meaningless because race does not exist amongst us yet we create social constructions between each other.…

In economic, cultural and social terms, American society has clearly grown less centralized in the past half century. The result of this is that our nation as a whole has become more diverse and fractured. I had a couple of experiences that really showed how politically fractured this country is and how deep the distaste is between the two parties. While on a family trip to Antigua I saw my family split up in two groups that refused to speak to each other because of a comment my uncle made about Donald Trump. This experience really opened my eyes to how much hatred the left and right wings have for eachother.…

Race is not biological but rather a term that has been socially constructed. Race has been socially constructed as a way to put individuals into racial classifications that are made up of groups thought to share particular distinctive physical characteristics, such as skin color and facial features. Race has been created and made to be physically different as a way to fuel beliefs of superiority and inferiority. Racial issues have become less prominent in modern society than in earlier decades in America. There have been many laws, acts, and movements to help gain equality for all of the people in America.…
