Why Is America Like Thanksgiving Dinner

Decent Essays
I think America is like a great big Thanksgiving dinner. First of all, Thanksgiving is the time for us to show our gratitude. I just want to thank all of our veterans for everything they do for our country. My grandfather was a veteran. I can not imagine all of those men and women going onto the field not knowing if they were ever going to go home again to see their families. America’s gift to my generation is a feast, like Thanksgiving dinner. First, we have thankfulness for all of the men and women who served for our country. In America, we have the right to vote, work, drive and many more activities we can partake in and to this we owe our veterans. It’s because of them that I can walk freely; they inspire me. Throughout their days of duty, they were motivated to fight for their values. They act as a martyr for the country and that’s a job most people are far from willing to take. Veterans play an important role in society today and the history of not only America as a whole, but the people who live in it. They have earned us our freedom and our rights, and even continue to help even after leaving the battlefield, whether by actively playing a role in their community or going on living the lives they earned for America. Having no veterans would signify no victorious battles or even fights to begin with. The veterans that America celebrates show that America stood and still stands for values and independence. They play a key role in history- who ever read a textbook that didn’t mention ferocious warriors or soldiers conquering forgotten cities?- and create our future at the same time.…

In America they would gather to celebrate Thanksgiving and they will do so at the dinner table. The meal, with roots in the ancient traditions of harvest festivals and in the religious fervor of the Puritans who settled here, has grown into a secular feast of abundance. So here’s the thing: while it is an iconic food, no one would argue that a roast turkey is the American national dish – turkey on multigrain for lunch aside. Plopping a turkey on an overladen table is reserved almost solely for this day.…

In his article “The Tragedy of the American Military”, James Fallows discusses how the majority of the American public holds the military in high esteem, but has little to no knowledge about military affairs. In turn, the United States is more likely to go to war and turn a blind eye towards sound military spending. Although I agree with the author on most of his arguments, I do not completely agree with all of them. The author states that the press does not voice public skepticism about the military as they do about other American institutions. I believe that the public is in more in touch with other institutions that have a direct effect on them.…
