Why Is America Interested In The Selection

Dear Kiera, there were several events in The Selection series that got me intrigued in the novel. I enjoyed the different personalities between characters and the complicated relationships. When America was first introduced to Maxon, she did not like him and was not interested in the Selection’s intentions of finding the ideal wife for him. As the storyline progressed, I found myself understanding Maxon’s reasons for the Selection’s process. America had a caring, brave, unique personality that sometimes was quite odd as she could not think clearly as to whom she wanted to be with. Since she had a clandestine relationship with Aspen, there were conflicts throughout the novel that created dramatic effects to the plot. Aspen set America free right …show more content…
“I let myself be sad. I let myself think of him” shows how him returning made her emotional (Cass). There were several more characters throughout the novel who had contrasting personalities. For example, there was Celeste, whose personality was opposite of America’s in that she was callous, mean, and had a self centered demeanor surrounding her. It’s funny how the novel made me think of the television show ‘The Bachelor’ in which a single man tries to find true love among several women, who all have unique personalities. Some of the women appear to be kind and caring while others are there just to get on camera. This relates to the novel in which some of the women are there just for the crown and not to find love. My favorite quote from the novel so far is, “Break my heart. Break it a thousand times if you like. It was only yours to break anyway” (Cass). Aside from the characters, I was captivated by the futuristic side of the novel. I enjoyed the history lessons that the women in the Selection were taught. One of the leading teachers explained: “‘History isn’t something you study. It’s something you should just know’”

It also allowed me to see how history gets cleaned up before it is presented in textbooks. Important key facts and vivid descriptions are usually left out the textbooks usually have distorted U.S. history. There always something inherently bias in textbooks. The most unfortunate error in history textbooks is their exclusion of an honest discussion of the history of racism and inequality in the United States. For example, prior to reading this book I was not…

The journal article was a great companion piece to go along with “The Unvanquished.” Berg claims that woman in Faulkner’s two novels are transformed from the New Woman to the True Womanhood and that women’s jobs in the war connected to gender roles because of the specific roles the characters played. The article starts off by explaining how “Flags in the Dust” depicts the New Woman after the Civil War is inappropriately gendered. Then, compared to “The Unvanquished” the New Woman is an imaginative retreat because the gender roles were not as rickety. Men are suspected to be the most important roles in the war, but in the novel the woman plays a whole other role.…
