Why Is America Declining

Decent Essays
Although many Americans view the United States to be declining, whether it be due to our political position or influence in other countries, I oppose this idea. I believe America to not be declining, but rather to be plateauing in growth while other countries are advancing. Another reason I view America to still be in the top ranks is because the United States is a land of opportunities to its’ own citizens and others around the world. America is willing to accept change within our country and the growth of other countries by supporting them. I believe America is not declining, but rather plateauing while other countries are growing. This way of thinking, as named by Zakaria, is titled “the rise of the rest”. There are shifts within 2010-2014 and in the Inglehart-Welzel value map it shows that in 2010 that the United States was located on the top of the English Speaking and it is half way of the map on the left side close to 0.0 which would be the middle of traditional and secular/rational. Yet, I believe that it was more secular/rational in 2010 because in society we aren’t on traditional scale like in 1830s. Now, continuing with the four year expand on whether the United State is Traditional or secular, it stayed on the far top meaning the United States had not change its values in political culture. However, as mentioned above the United State falls about the middle vertically, which indicates that religion and traditional values are less important for…

As I said earlier... The War of 1812 caused the United States to become dependent on itself. Because we couldn't trade with Europe anymore, we had to manufacture our own goods, and the Northern states ended up becoming major centers of industry. That was where this all began. Then a couple other things happened at the time that really caused the market revolution to take off.…

Unlike the way John Stossel sees it in his documentary, Is America Number One, America is no longer the greatest country in the world. While we are better off than some of the countries that there are out there such as India, a country that is so overpopulated that it is hard to even compare the two countries, we are still not at the top of the list, literally. As we were once known for freedom and equality for all people, incredible political leaders, and rankings far ahead of other countries, we as Americans seem to forget that times have changed and that other countries have caught up to us. One of the main arguments that is brought up when people are asked why America is so great is freedom and equality. Yeah, it is fantastic that we are free but... were not the only ones.…

Pros and Cons of American Imperialism America is one of the most powerful nations of the world. Its sheer size, economy, territories, and technological advancements make it so influential that many smaller nations or cultures look up to America as if it were a god. Many decades ago, America established its dominance over other nations, particularly during the two world wars by showing off its military prowess and interfering with what are supposedly local affairs of other governments. Imperialism is more of a negative idea than a positive one – it signifies a nation's thirst for expansion at the expense of others.…

From Whence we Came Famous French historian Alexis de Tocqueville once said, “America is great because she is good. If America ever ceases to be good, she will cease to be great” (qtd. in Carson 651). In “Recovering America’s Exceptionalism,” Dr. Ben S. Carson explains that our Judeo-Christian roots and values are what set America apart from all other countries. These values include decency, honesty, compassion, and fairness.…

America wasn 't discovered, it was built by a group of innovative, young business men who were often referred to as America’s first captains of industry. In 1865, towards the end of the civil war, America was seen as a failing nation and as an unsuccessful democracy on the brink of collapse. However, from 1865-1914, America experienced an incredible period of growth which transformed this nation into the most powerful country in the world. During this time frame, the American economy increased by an unprecedented four hundred percent, and the nation experienced a period of industrial and economic expansion and innovation which had never been seen before (Mintz, McNeil. This period of progress can be attributed to a collection of business…

According to Merriam Webster, Americana can be defined as materials concerning or characteristics of America, its civilization, or its culture (Merriam-Webster). Taking the definition of Americana into consideration the vanishing Americana is the disappearance of significant stores, traditions, and items that make up American culture. In Going, Going, Gone: Vanishing Americana, some disappearing pieces of Americana were blue laws, carbon paper, girdles, slide rules and the smell of burning leaves in the fall. For this assignment, I interviewed my father, Stephen about the vanishing Americana. Stephen was asked if he remembered anything on the list, or other childhood activities, food, or events that aren’t around anymore.…

America's Economy “We are becoming a society in which the poor tend to stay poor, no matter how hard they work;” (Document A), to countless Americans this sounds like a rigid caste society, the polar opposite of America. Yet, a considerable amount of Americans firmly assert this is the reality of America today. In reality, the economy works relatively the same as it did half a century ago, however, people today are not working as diligently nor as much. The economy, as well as the opportunity of social mobility, is still truly alive but the work ethic needed to achieve it is dead.…

When looking at the Great Depression, America as a country did not want to go through a struggle of that magnitude again. However we managed to see a similar situation about fifty years after the depression and another present day. Although neither of these was as bad as the Great Depression these recessions show us that the President control of the economy is simply fortune. The President can influence the economy but controlling the economy is more sophisticated than people think. In addition any expansion experienced in that Presidents term in office is mainly predetermined by the harshness of the recession that may have occurred before him.…

Lipset has explained that the five American creeds of liberalism, egalitarianism, populism, individualism, and laissez faire as the very basis for the foundation and development of America. Although American democracy is deemed to be the model to follow, the set of beliefs also has another edge to its sword. The negative traits shown in America is nevertheless a result of the very set of beliefs. Hence, although America is certainly exceptionally different from other countries, it does not necessarily mean that it is the best. It certainly is the global leader of the world, and its basis of exceptionalism is a long discussed theme, but it is yet to be observed whether U.S. will be the superpower in the long term, or its uniqueness will lead to its…

If you ask me America has been on a decline for quite sometime now. Issues such as racism, crime and violence, and in more recent news, the presidential race, have been immensely sending our country on a downhill spiral. African Americans have never been seen as equals in the United States. This, however, began to change in the late 1860’s, when the 13th, 14th, and 15th amendments were passed (The Civil War Amendments). These are known as the Civil War Amendments.…
