Why Is America A Land Of Opportunity Essay

America is the land of opportunity, it is the land of the free, however is America really the land of opportunity when It comes to education? Are we getting the true education that we all deserve? Are the teachers willing to help us to succeed in life? Are we as students ready to receive all that Is being taught to us? Education is being defined as the grasping of information and putting it into action throughout our life. In society today, people often think that America accomplishes what we call true education today. Throughout the duration of the time I have spent in America, I examined many children that did not turn out the way they should, I suppose it is not their fault, maybe it is the school system in America that turned them …show more content…
The countries that have the best educational system are the most developed countries in the world: The USA, and more developing countries have low progress in their educational system-Nigeria. According to Francine Prose “I know why the caged bird cannot read” she believed that the Unites States are losing what they should focus on with students when she specified that “In fact less and less attention is being paid to what has been written let alone how”(Prose 177). When I was in middle school - i was in 7th grade- we were always given a book to read, I did not want to ever read those books because my teachers would talk a lot about what the book is being didactic about, I wanted the teacher to talk about how the author wrote the book; the steps that he or she took in writing the book. I never got that from any from my teacher and that built me into never wanting to read any assigned book. I later noticed in Nigeria that before we would read a book the teacher would firstly talk about the importance of the book, they would also talk about how we need to think about the way the author is writing. I however don’t think that that is the only problem that the American school system is facing today, another problem is that students in America “despise dead writers”(Prose 181). Being in America for almost 7 years I have learned to hate old writers, why is this? You may ask. After I found …show more content…
America and other countries in the world have various types of schooling system based on their culture and the mentality the country grew in. I had had the opportunity to experience both systems and I think, based on my culture that the American system is the best system ever. Although they both have the negative and positive aspects, but the American education serves the goals of what we call “true education” because they have many opportunities and resources to ensure that we all succeed. Other countries also have a positive part; they teach their students to respect their teacher. However all of this that I have been talking about also depends on the students themselves, they have their education in their hands. They have the power to pay attention in class to succeed and to have the “freedom”(Wallace 235).t live in the “real world”(Kyoko 204), on the other side they can chose not to listen and learn and finish their education

Barber shows how foreign students receive better education than American ones when he cites, “American children are in school only about 180 days a year, as against 240 days or more for children in Europe or Japan.” From this, it can be seen that America does not prioritize education as much as other countries do, and is currently being left behind. With increasing dropout rates, lack of basic literacy, and de-emphasis on getting a good education, American students are being deprived of their civil right to be able to become well-informed and cognizant people, which later on will prevent them from being successful in…

In America, an education is no longer considered to be an option but in fact, a necessity. Many are raised to believe in order to ensure a successful future, education is a key component. In fact, there are others who believe that the educations systems we have in place today, actually does more bad than good. There have been many movements that had an idea to insure that students are properly educated and all receive the same form of education but, the institution of these movements may have caused more damage and simply relied on the forcing of educators to produce a group of workers who are unable to consciously think for themselves. Although there is no way of making sure that the potential of a student is fully developed, possible solutions…

One of the main reasons I thought that America was a land of opportunity was because America gave the immigrants and other people different life options that their country probably didn’t offer them. Another reason was America offered opportunities for immigrants and people to pursue their dreams and also another reason was America offered many different types of jobs. The Hulls House also gave immigrants an opportunity.…

It also makes me wonder why there has not been any positive change in the education system of the U.S. It appears to be common knowledge on the ways the education powerhouses became so successful, but there seems to be little effort on the behalf of the U.S to emulate these countries. It seems like the U.S does not want to take all the steps other countries have taken to revamp their education system. Based on information from this book, leaders in education need to view the purpose and function of education differently, and then try to implement education reform strategies. Until there is a mindset change, I truly believe the education system in the U.S could never be as successful as other countries.…

Throughout time, America or the New World has been thought of as a "promised land." In the past, Puritan and Colonial writers believed it to be this due to the blank slate that many different people can influence. Now, America is called the "land of opportunity. " America holds better career opportunities and a better education for those dreaming of a bright future that they might not be able to achieve in their home land.…

Well, Prince Ea, a spoken word poet, uses his YouTube platform to address this. Posting a video titled, “I Just Sued the School System”, Ea provides a depth look at our education system. The video amusingly takes place in a court-room where Prince is standing before a jury, convicting our modern education system of various crimes. He believes that our current system is cookie-cutter: failing to recognize the individuality of students that would help them succeed. Mike Rose in “Blue Collar Brilliance” has similar point-of-views but focuses on the talent of those who might not be the best at school, but have many other talents.…
