Ambition is the want for something and the willingness to gain it. In Macbeth’s case, he has the ambition to become king. Macbeth’s ambition leads him to kill the other king. I presume that Macbeth would have killed King Duncan without any outside factors eventually. Macbeth was impacted by three main things- the witches, his wife, and his own hunger for power. The witches appear in the very beginning of the play and give Macbeth a prophecy. The prophecy tells Macbeth that he will become Thane of Cawdor and the king. Banquo is told that he will father kings. Macbeth and Banquo didn’t believe this in the beginning. Macbeth was fairly content with waiting until he naturally became king. However, Lady Macbeth wanted the power of being queen immediately. She insulted Macbeth repeatedly until he gave into his want for power and agreed to kill Duncan. The wife of Macbeth would have killed Duncan herself- even if Macbeth refused to. Once Macbeth agreed, she began scheming and planning on how to kill the king. Lady Macbeth was very ambitious herself, but he lost her ambition once she became queen and had the power she desired. Lady Macbeth’s initial ambition and coaxing would have been lost on Macbeth if he didn’t have his own ambition.
