Is a University degree necessary to succeed in life?
The literal meaning of the word success, which originated from the Latin verb succedere, is accomplishment of an aim or purpose. However, the definition of success might vary from person to person. This is why it is very difficult to answer the claim that a person needs a university education to be successful in life because success in life means different things to different people. For a youngster, success might mean having a lot of money or having a fulfilling career whereas a religious organization might claim that success means finding spiritual happiness and being at peace with God. Surprisingly enough, none of these inspiring entrepreneurs mention money at all. This article only strengthens my view regarding the need for a university education for becoming successful in life. Sir Richard Branson, who heads the Virgin Empire of brands that include Virgin Airlines, mobile carriers etc. thinks that what’s most important for success is the interactivity with the work itself. Elon Musk, the man behind things like PayPal and Tesla, which are changing the world, also seems to echo Branson’s viewpoint on success. In this article, Jeff Kelly, a freelance writer from Texas, USA talks about some poorly educated but highly successful people. He acknowledges the fact that education is very important but sarcastically also points out the common perception of people about education and its benefits towards a career. He says that most people believe that the more schooling a person receives, the more successful his career is. However, to prove his point, he points out people from different works of life, like John Rockefeller, Steve Jobs, Henry Ford, Albert Einstein etc. who were school drop outs, and still made it large.
I completely agree with Jeff regarding this. Education can in no way guarantee success. It’s the inner will of a person that matters. All these people became successful not because they were born with a silver spoon, or because they had numerous college degrees, but they tasted success due to their strong will and hard work.
