Summary: Why Employers Use Interviews

In this article, the authors demonstrated that research could also benefit candidates, not just the employers. Employers use the interview strategy to find a candidate with specific skills who is qualified when the job requirements change instead of a likeable person. By knowing some interview styles, and strategies can help candidates in their job research, which is the purpose of this article.

They introduced two types of interviews in this article, unstructured interview and structured interview. The unstructured interview often asked questions that based on interviewers’ personal feeling. This makes candidates hard to prepare and plan for their interviews because the questions are open-ended, subjective, and general. Interviewers also judge the candidates’ physical appearance based on their facial attractiveness, use of cosmetics, type of attire. Because of interviewers have the biases that favor the people who like them, and it is difficult for them to recall critical information. They claimed that candidates could prepare for the structured interview by understanding the different degrees of interview structure, and constructs, and questions types. When candidates are having the unstructured interview, they need to be aware that interviewers are using the conversation to gather information. For the structured interview, candidates will be capable to answer the questions effectively if they are well prepared. In order to prepare for the interview, candidates should be able to describe their values, personality characteristics and what they can do for the company. Normally, interviewers like to hear a real example that happened to the candidates because they believe that a real event can determine the candidates’ attitudes, work habits, and skills.
