Reflection On Graduate English 101

Improved Essays
I should graduate English 101 because I worked hard, changed my attitude and perspective, and buckled down and challenged myself when it came to my writing. Throughout this course, I found myself becoming comfortable with the uncomfortable. I challenged myself not only when it came to the topics I chose but, I also dug to find small connections that made a big difference by the end of the paper. I also pushed myself to learn and incorporate new ideas and techniques within my writing. In my portfolio I showed my growth from highschool to college and my growth through my time at the college. I continued to connect it to my other class’ at WVC and how my new writing skills and techniques transferred to my success in other classes and other areas …show more content…
In my high school planning for my paper, Some of Us Just Don’t Have it, my planning was thought out by just writing a summary of what my main paper was going to be about. That made it difficult as I was writing to elaborate on my ideas because I didn’t allow myself any supporting evidence in my planning. I simply would state a fact and then when I went to write my paper, I would have to go back and find supporting evidence to better my writing. Now, through an example of the F.E.A.R. template I was taught in this course, my plan is a an organized description of what my actual essay will be writing on but, it is simple and states the facts. It allows for me to know what the supporting evidence is and when I go to write my actual paper, I just add extra commentary to better elaborate on that …show more content…
This shows through with my example from high school, I Am Who I Am. This essay I wrote lacks in strong verbs and strong structure. In high schools we did not take time out of the curriculum to teach more in-depth on the single things, like making a verb stronger and how that ultimately can make your paper stronger. In the course through the college, we talked a lot about making verbs stronger and how that allows for a clearer picture to be presented to the audience. We did exercises like my example from one of our verb exercises where we took strong verbs and made them weaker to show the difference and then took weaker verbs and made them stronger to create a picture and help describe the picture more clearly. Also in Area C, we starting learning about the different parts of a paper and we went more in-depth with the different elements that help a writer become successful in their writing. It includes; in-text citations, a works cited page, and how to correctly address each type of writing in a paper. As an example I showed my high school compare and contrast essay and it is a good representation on how I used to write and then I gave an example of a paper I wrote for psychology about psychological therapies. It is made clear that in my high school paper I did not cite my sources, I did not have in-text

He showed me that with every argument comes a counter argument; adding a counter argument reinforced my argument greatly. Another technique I applied to my essays with Professor Castro’s instruction was planning. In high school, planning an essay seemed like a waste of time because the assignments were always just five paragraph, five sentence essays. Since we had to write these essays in such a short amount of time for tests, I was able to produce the work the night before. On the other hand, Professor Castro has shown the divergence between high school and college; planning and editing are two essential steps in writing.…

Throughout the entirety of this English 101 course, I have seen my skills as a writer grow. In the beginning of the school year, my writing fell short of my expectations, but as I continued to work and learn the principles of writing, I have written papers that I am proud to say are mine. Among the aspects of my writing I have improved, the best strives are seen within my my counter arguments and overall strength and coherency of my papers. To begin, when looking at a paper I wrote in August on necessity of first drafts, there were large gaps in my elaboration, bringing concerns as to whether I was arguing and proving a point or merely summarizing what Lamott, the author of the article, originally said. When attempting to argue my evidence, I stated,…

Dear First Year Writing Assessment Committee: In this letter, I will explain my learning outcomes and experiences with my essays for English 1010. English 1010, defined by academic standards, is to develop in first-year college writers a deeper understanding of the complexities of writing through instruction and guided practice in the skills, processes, and strategies necessary for effective, successful writing. In my past semester of English 1010, I was able to demonstrate my abilities to be an effective writer and enhance my writing skills through guiding essay projects. I do believe my abilities were improved in topics including: finding the author’s purpose, explaining ideas, revising, editing, proofreading, organizing the structure of my paper, and etc.…

When I began studying at the University of Montevallo, I had a background of high school creative writing and English classes, and one summer of a college English class. To be honest, I was terrified of jumping into my fall English 102 class. I felt I was unprepared for a serious college level composition class, and that I would have a strenuous time adjusting to a four-year university. However, as I walk away from my English 102 class I carry the understanding of writing a college level essay, undertaking research and completing a research and argument paper properly, and knowledge to prepare me for my other classes and profession.…

English 101 taught me how to be more creative and broad about writing. Example on Essay 1 I didn’t really mention anything about Sonia Sotomayor’s mother not wanting her to work, and behind that was facts and important information about he context that I missed. I also approach my assignments differently now; I make sure my paragraphs are structured in the write order for an easy read for the reader. I realized when I start off with a good approach on a topic I have to tools and skills learned in class to expand ideas and write a solid piece of writing to read. I did also realize that I am bad to start off with, I haven’t seemed to find that spark to start me off right, so I guess that’s why they call it a shitty first…

Throughout this semester of English 101, writing has become more of a skill than a struggle. Writing was a challenge that I dreaded when I chose to be in the course, nonetheless with time, I learned from my mistakes and was able to improve. This course made me very doubtful on whether I could be capable of even writing a paper that would provide me with a decent grade, but at the same time made me push myself in my writing technique. In the end, I can reflect that I learned from my mistakes and wrote papers that took time and dedication to accomplish. I learned from this class to be confident in my writing and make all the mistakes to receive the grade I want in the end.…

My personal experience and take away from English 111 was what I expected it would be before I started the course. No, there was no “life changing” moment for me from this course and I honestly I can’t say I am a better or worse citizen for taking this class, but I can say my writing skills have improved, and that I feel more confident in my writing than prior to taking this course. Writing has and continues to be a challenge for me, I have no illusion that I will ever be a “perfect” or even a “good” writer for that matter, but because some of things I learned in how to prepare and to write an essay I feel I’m a much improved writer. Specifically the topics covered from the first module of this course help my development.…
