Why Do Millennials Cause Anxiety?

This issue of everyone getting a prize and that causing anxiety I think is a very ‘Millennial’ issue. The term is just a label for our age group, who maybe did grow up with recognition for participation, but simultaneously were held to higher standards. I think I was in the fourth grade when standardized testing began for Mathematics and English. It was an experience that is stressful, but everyone goes through it. Rather than participation awards affecting us and causing anxiety. I think that standardize testing was a big issue. These standardize test, tell you how you measure up to a population of individuals the same age. I think I was pro-giving participation trophies because they were a reinforcement to effort. Personally, I do not think …show more content…

They’re at once constantly exposed on social media but also permanently sheltered by overbearing parents.” This style of parenting is still popular; I do not think it will change. Adults do want to protect us, and I get older I realize I act the same way to my nieces and nephews. I think when I was planning on where to go to college, and why I decided to remain at home and commute was rationalized that having my family close to me would mean I would be the most comfortable instead of moving to Albany for where I originally intended on going …show more content…
The positive attributes to being a Millennial are that we value higher education, and we tend to be self-assured/confident that leads us to be very ambitious. This article reemphasizes, that “stress keeps them awake at night and they are unsure of where they are going in life (…) Because of increasing stress levels, irritability and anger are ramped. About 19% of Millennials suffer from depression and anxiety.” As a graduate of 2016, the quote, “from 2010 to 2020 over 19 million college graduates will hit the job market and the economy will not be able to sustain those numbers. Stress is magnified.” I hope I will find a job after college and keep my optimism to combat all the stress involved with going into the ‘real

What would life be like if everyone got an award for simply showing up to work, school, and sports? Based on the "Trophies for All" policy every youth athlete gets a trophy for simply coming to games and practices. Participation trophies do not prepare these future adults to live and work in the real world. These youth athletes also need to know that you have to work hard to get what you want. And finally, youth athletes need to know that not everyone is a winner.…

In Vivian Diller’s article, “Do We All Deserve Gold? Setting Kids Up To Fail” and Lisa Heffernan’s article, “In defense of participation trophies: Why they really do teach the right values” both authors disagree on many different things about participation trophies. The one disagreement that drives these authors the furthest apart is kids being given trophies for just participating or giving trophies to those who only win and what the value of this holds for the kids. Lisa Heffernan states that giving “participation trophies remind young kids that they are part of something, and may help build enthusiasm to return for another season” in her article “In defense of participation trophies: Why they really do teach the right values” (In Defense).…

What’s wrong with giving children participation trophies? Authors Merryman, Priceman and Abate described their bold opinions concerning the topic of participation awards, allowing me to decide my view of these awards: allowing kids to be encouraged by participation awards is useful in young kids taking part in different activities. Parker Abate claims within his article “In Youth Sports, Participation Trophies Send a Powerful Message” that participation trophies help kids remember that teamwork with peers allows one to succeed in life and that succeeding doesn’t always mean coming in first. Abate states young athletes deserve at least some small form accomplishment because a child’s self-esteem drops when kids’ peers receive a trophy and they don’t; the participation trophy lets them know they were an important part of their team even if they did not win.…

My reasons for this initiative are: they give individuals a false perspective, only the winners of events should receive awards, and finally that participation awards have no real value. I will support these three reasons with evidence and show you why my statement is true in the following paragraphs. Participation awards give all people a false perspective. I know this from my own experience. Last year at the end of football season we had an "awards" meeting.…

She also states that the ones who do work hard will become upset when they do not receive rewards and recognition for their accomplishments. On the other hand, if we did not hand out trophies to the kids that just participated, they could also become extremely motivated to receive a trophy next time and the kids that did work hard and earned a trophy would not feel cheated. When kids are young trophies do motivate them but as Carol said, by age 4 and 5 they know that not everyone deserves one. At around age 7 or 8 we should stop giving trophies to everyone and have kids push themselves to earn a trophy or an…

In many youth sports, participation trophies are given to every child. Basically if the kid shows up they get a trophy even if they do nothing and put no effort into playing their game. In today’s society people give children too many trophies. When a child is given too many trophies when they do not actually earn it, it can actually lower their motivation and shield them from the realities of life. When a kid is given the same trophy as everyone else it lowers their motivation.…

If everybody gets a trophy it can take away the pride of having a trophy. Rewarding every effort with trophies does not prepare children for adult life. In order to receive a trophy, an athlete should prepare and perform above average at an event or at the end of a season.
