Why I Wanted To Be Like Mr. Incredible

Decent Essays
In 2005 at the age of five, my childhood officially began in Mexico—I moved from Iowa, so my family could take care of my sick grandfather. I ended up being a tomboy because I hung out with my boy cousins. We loved watching The Incredibles, so I pretended that I was Mr. Incredible, and my cousin was Syndrome. I always stopped him from attacking a city.
Since I lived in small town Mexico, people were full of stereotypes towards how a young lady should act. I realized that what I was doing was not acceptable. When school started, other girls didn’t want me to play with them because they thought that I was weird. At that time, I was so confused and didn’t know what I could do to feel accepted.
That’s why I wanted to be like Mr. Incredible.

If you had asked any of my peers for a description of who I am, they would have said that I was someone who was shy, and possibly even a bit awkward. This was a personality trait that I had been struggling with throughout the majority of my life. I had grown up as an only child, incessantly feeling out of place among my peers. It wasn’t until the middle of my freshman year of high school that I gained the self-confidence I had only dreamed about.…

Over the years and years spent on studying mythology, Joseph Campbell came up with the concept of The Hero’s Journey. The Hero’s Journey states that all hero’s travel in a similar path and go through many similar stages that’ll lead them to their reward. However, not every hero’s journey has to involve obstacles as in slaying a dragon or trying to save the world. In my case, I had to do nothing but trying to make it through sixth grade year. Sadly, sixth grade was the year that I faced the most challenges, real world challenges at least.…

I was born as Regina Lim in San Jose, California, the first of my Cambodian immigrant family to be born in the United States of America and the oldest of three siblings. I grew up in a small townhouse with my large family on the east side of San Jose in a pretty rough neighborhood where there was frequent gang activity. For most of my early life, I was raised by my grandparents because my parents had me at a fairly young age and were both busy with either work or school, and sometimes both. Although my grandparents were the ones raising me for the beginning stages of my childhood, they were also occupied most of the time doing what they could to help support our family so I had to learn independence early in life. Learning how to become independent at a young age contributed to me being able to leave home when I was 19 years old.…

What comes to mind when you hear the word “Immigrant”? Do you think of people who are living in the shadows? People who are working for less than minimum wage on the fields in scorching heat just to provide for their families? Maybe you think of people who are “stealing” jobs, who don’t belong in the United States. Whatever your opinion may be, one undeniable fact is that immigrants are here in the United States.…

Last December, I was on my twin bed sitting by my window, blasting to Lady Gaga, when I came to the realization that I was never really me. The identity of the timid, smart Hispanic girl I had fabricated to please my English teachers in high school was not who I was. There are numerous amounts of people in the world who spend the rest of their lives not knowing who they really are, and a bigger quantity of people who hide their true selves; I was one of the few percentage who lived in denial of their sexual orientation. My whole life I rejected the possibility of fancying the opposite sex because of the environment I grew up in. In 6th grade when I was 11 years old, I was jealous of how much one of my female friends would pay attention to our…
