Why I Want To Work As A Speech-Language Pathologist

Decent Essays
The hospital appeals to me most as the best clinical setting for me to practice as a Speech-language Pathologist. I have always pictured myself working in a hospital as an adult. I see hospital as one of the main venues for health care and is seen as a place for assistance. The feeling of being in the hospital, surrounded by individuals who have worked incredibly hard to get where they are and continue to work to benefit others inspires me. Also, the hospital has a unique feel about it with a plethora of health professionals around that I may see a larger scope of practice as compared to the cases I would face in a different setting. With a positive connotation and ties to providing aid to those that need it, I see the hospital as a better fit for me as compared to a school, private practice, nursing home, or other institution. …show more content…
Within the hospital setting I also work with spoken and written language, cognition, voice, resonance, feeding and swallowing and other potential etiologies. The hospital will deal with a larger scale of practices because of it’s space and ability to have more specialities. A school or nursing home would be more limited in that aspect. I hope to assist those in the neonatal setting and with developmental and genetic disorders. Working with those on the autism spectrum or with other developmental and genetic disabilities such as down syndrome or cerebral palsy is of great interest and importance to me and I wish to include this in my scope of practice. I would expect to provide my services to those who are also transgender and are working on voice and verbal/nonverbal

Patient transport has given me the tools to properly interact with patients after their time at the hospital has concluded. Working at cat-scan support showed me how to properly give an IV and be a secretary for the cat-scan team by helping patients in and out of the cat-scan room and providing them with the proper materials to ensure the scans are done properly. Both these volunteer opportunities, exposed me to the culture of a hospital. I was amazed by the positive atmosphere and always looked forward to interacting with patients by making their day better in any way possible.
