Why I Want To Volunteer In High Schools

Decent Essays
The first two years of high school I volunteered at my old eighth grade school during volleyball season. Here, I would help the couch train the girls and help during games and tourmates. Two days of Halloween I would help at a little festival with children. In junior year, I grew very interested in helping the elderly, so I began looking for openings and began volunteering. However, I didn’t work there for long. During the summer I volunteered at the senior center and I’m currently still volunteer there. I like to volunteer in where places I can help others, it can range from children to senior

For my sixty hours of volunteer work I decided to volunteer at a Child Life Center which was in a poverty stricken area in Norfolk, Va. At the child life center my job as a volunteer was to assist the children with their homework, help the staff monitor the children on local field trips, as well as serve as a positive role model for the children. The experience I had at Park Place Child Life Center was one I will honestly never forget. Although I didn’t get any actual counseling experience, I was able to learn the ways that the non-profit organization received their funding, I was able to gain experience in working with the youth, and I was also able to make a positive impact on the lives of children who were considered “at-risk youth”. To go there every day and be able to see the change the children had in their behaviors and how much just some attention and affection from adults impacted their behaviors was honestly amazing.…

As a high school student, I volunteered at the Orland Park Public Library as well as Palos Heights Community Hospital. I was a computer volunteer assistant who would help patrons with print jobs, taking printing money, and help those who had trouble using the Internet. I also helped senior citizens with their cell phones. The librarian would book an appointment and I would be ready to teach the elderly how to use their phone effectively and properly as well as what apps they should download. At eh hospital, I am a sterile supply worker and a courier.…

In the past few years, I’ve volunteered with a variety of organizations from National Honor Society, National Spanish Honor Society, and Key Club. I have also co-founded a Community Outreach Club at high school. Through the Church I’ve assisted with Vacation Bible School and middle school retreats. One of my favorite memories came from volunteering for the first time with National Spanish Honor Society. Choosing to participate in this program was not a difficult decision, since I knew I wanted to continue practicing my Spanish and volunteer in the community at the same time.…

I was able to volunteer at a local bank that was sponsoring the Lake Park Elementary School for the holiday season. The school has over 300 underprivileged students between the ages of kindergarten and fifth grade. Most of the students at that school only have one meal per day. Along with other volunteers, I packaged bags that contained candy, toys, toiletries, a blanket, and a pair of athletic shoes. The bags were able to provide the children with goods that we often take for granted.…

I devoted myself to being a key part of the interact club. I participated in events such as volunteering in local soup kitchens, Spicket River cleanup, earth day and helping to pick up trash around the city of Lawrence. After I saw what a difference I could make by just simply helping my community through the school, I decided to do some community service on my own. Following my trade area I went on to volunteer at Lawrence General Hospital. Throughout my time there, my eyes were opened even more as to what a change one can simply make by dedicating one's time to others.…

Volunteering at Veterans Affairs Medical Center was one of the greatest experience I've ever had. Sitting down with the elderly and getting to know them, I noticed if more teens could actually sit down and take the time to talk to an elderly person they could gain an opulent amount of knowledge. Sitting down and getting to talk an innumerable amount of veterans as I could, I was intrigued by how each person had a story of their own going through WWII. Voluntarily, I was able to contribute to the organization by having open conversations with the veterans, providing beverages, and having a great time. It wasn't till the end of the program when my perception began to change about the organization I volunteered for, it's more than just about kids…

I started building my foundation for community service back in fifth grade with Girl Scouts. My troop volunteered at the Ronald McDonald House, read to kindergartners, and organized food at the food pantry. I continued these acts all the way up through eighth grade. In high school, I joined Key Club, where I sold flowers for powder puff, volunteered at my elementary school’s Trunk or Treat, and helped with the book and coat drive. Outside of school, I continued serving in my church through events like VBS.…

We would go to the nearby lake, which was extremely polluted, and pick up the trash.…

    1. What is your definition of “citizenship” and what you consider to be your “actual” responsibilities as a citizen? My definition of citizenship is when someone loves, respects, shares common knowledge of American culture and its history. I believe that all people should be able to have citizenship of the country they were born in; and for those that want to gain citizenship should be required to pass a citizenship exam, along with current American citizens.…

I am able to get along well with everyone I meet. I listen intently to what others have to say and put myself into their position. A few examples of diverse interactions I have experienced are through my job at Scheels, volunteering at Country Manor Nursing Home, We Day, volleyball, and softball. For instance, I helped serve a diverse group of individuals at a local nursing home by playing cards and talking with the residence. From these experiences, I have grown as an individual by being more understanding and aware of the differences of all people.…

As defined by Webster Dictionary, community service is “a service that is performed for the benefit of the public or its institutions” and is synonyms with public service. An increasing number of high schools are requiring their students to fulfill a designated number of hours to the community in order to graduate. Many school districts believe that community service teaches students responsibility. High school students should be required to complete a designated number of community service hours, as community service participation can be used as leverage on a college application, allow students to build their network to learn more about scholarship opportunities, and assist students with developing their leadership skills. Admission into a college or university…
