Why I Want To Volunteer In College

Improved Essays
Before attending UNC, I spent my whole life in a small town where everything was familiar. Arriving in Chapel Hill was a change. Suddenly, I didn’t know the quickest way to get to Cookout. Or which roads to avoid during rush hour. Or anything beyond the UNC campus. For the first time in eighteen years, I was in a place completely new to me. Everyone — from parents, to mentors, to RAs — had driven this mantra of “get involved, join a club, volunteer” into my head, assuring that it would help ease the college culture shock. The problem for me wasn’t getting involved, but choosing what specifically to get involved in. During high school, I volunteered in areas that intrigued me, the ones catered to my interest. As a bookworm, I enjoyed volunteering

In addition, I am diligent in my participation in social activities. I am involved in many honors societies and clubs that prioritize social involvement and enthusiasm to the field it focuses on such as National Honors Society, Drama Club/ Thespian Honors Society, National Dance Honors Society and Tri M Music Honors Society. Conjointly, I have held leadership positions and acted in further volunteer settings with these groups such as Secretary for National Dance Honors Society (2014-2015), President for National Dance Honors Society (2015-2016), Social Chair for Drama Club (2014-2015) and volunteer Hawkfest (school spring festival) performer for Drama Club (2014). This shows that I’ve gone beyond the traditional classroom setting in order to participate socially and to challenge myself academically and in extracurricular activities with leadership positions. Finally, as someone who hopes to study international business and Mandarin Chinese, I notably apply myself to global…

Over the past year, I’ve been exposed to many different facets of the Rotary Club of Tucson. I have a very distinct favorite memory from the year. In December, I had the opportunity to volunteer with the Salvation Army bell ringing. I was paired with Maria, a new Rotarian. We had an amazing experience.…

Oak Hill is a small Appalachian village in southeastern Ohio. Although Oak Hill is a small, quiet community, it lacks diversity in its population. Ninety one percent of the nearly 1600 people, living in Oak Hill, are Caucasian and 100 percent live in a rural setting. Growing up, in the Oak Hill community, had a major impact on how I see equity, inclusion, and diversity. I began school, in the only available district, with about 100 classmates and my graduating class is about the same size.…

A few months ago, I had a very candid conversation with my dad. He sat me down and we talked about my future, my plans for college and beyond and how he can help me achieve those goals. My plan for the time being was to get my generals done here at LSC and hopefully by then know what I want to do for a career so I can choose a college and a degree that suites me. After that my father expected a very familiar tale. The one where you get a job you love, a family you love more, to retire early and travel often.…

I have been volunteering at my local library ever since my high school career has begun. Over the summer, I motivate little kids to read: I convince them to comprehend the various stories read, and in return they are rewarded with various prizes. During the weekends, I assist children with the material they may be struggling with in school. Every now and then, a few kids would bring in their homework, while others brought in either textbooks or their notes.…

While on a tour I learned that during the school year there were always activities going on outside the buildings. I’m very involved in my high school and community. I have taken on leadership positions in a lot of my clubs to expand the student involvement. On top of involvement in my student community, I am also involved in my town’s communities. I have given speeches to politicians on behalf of my town and volunteered at places like my local nursing home.…

With each step taken, choice made, and tear shed, I have surprised myself throughout my high school career. For example, about four years ago, I unexpectedly made the decision to join the Ecology Club in my high school. Life had just begun as a ninth-grader, and I was determined to join as many clubs and organizations as humanly possible. This dream, however, almost did not suffice because of my limited time and love for service. At first, the Ecology Club was alarming due to the requirement of twenty-five environmental service hours a semester and attendance to each activity.…

In need of a volunteer for the preparatory summer program? Well look no further, as I would be more than happy to oblige. As there is a vacant position within the program, and I have a burning passion for providing counseling and guidance to those in need of it, I would be grateful if you were to grant me an interview. Central's host of guidance counselors and higher education assistants have answered all of my post-high school related questions in an in-depth and knowledgeable manner. As a fickle and undecided graduating senior myself, I have also researched the many varying paths one could choose to travel after high school, including, but not limited to, college, trade school, military, and immediate workforce options.…

In the words of Benjamin Franklin, “Either write things worth reading, or do things worth the writing.” Whether inventing the first computer in 1946 or founding female empowerment organizations like Katlyn Grasso of GenHERation, Penn students, in class and after graduation, readily fulfill both challenges about which Franklin wrote. Through the encouragement of innovation and applied knowledge on campus, Penn students break into the real world with experience under their belt and a liberal education. I am excited to join this community of well-rounded inventors, testing the limits of my mind and learning to apply my education to lasting social problems. With its commitment purposeful applications of education, Penn is the only place I can imagine…

If I am going to be honest I have not done a lot of service/volunteering throughout my high school experience. I am a full time competitive swimmer and I swim about 16 hours a week and it is very hard for me to make time to volunteer in my community. As my high school years are coming to an end I want to make it a goal to volunteer more and make time even when I think I do not have any time. I feel guilty because I am so fortunate to live the life I have and I need to give back to those who have nothing and are suffering. I know I am very busy with academics and my sport, but it is time for me to take a step back and realize there are lots of little things I could do to help community or someone in need.…

Recently, a lot people around me have asked me why I always smile and never show my anger or my sadness. That is probably because overcoming obstacles have made me into a positive person. Throughout my nineteen years of life I have had five major surgeries that including life-threatening tumor removal, skin grafts due to fingers were not growing after burns, retinal hemorrhage after being hit by a soccer ball, tonsil removal as I had breathing difficulties, and extracting four wisdom teeth at once recently, of which the latter was nothing compared to the others. Four operations out of five were received before age ten. My mother still wonders the reason why I am not good at language comprehension is because I received quite a few general…

I, like many other students, had come from a school where I was able to participate and lead several organizations across campus and experienced a bit of a culture shock at Deerfield as I felt that I couldn’t contribute much to the community. Throughout the ski season, I discovered that while I am not, nor will ever be, the strongest skier on the team, my role as someone who cheers people on, keeps smiling on days with bad conditions, and organizes special team dinners is just as impactful as being the MVP. I know that the “small fish in big pond” feeling is something that many students experience as they transition to Deerfield, and I know that my experience of learning how to contribute my skills to help the community will assist me in guiding others through difficult…

What do people get out of volunteering when there are no tangible benefits? Regardless of motive, giving your time to help the community is valuable and can have a great impact for humanity. People volunteer all around the world for multiple reasons. Some volunteer as a way to gain recognition in the community, build relationships with people (networking), or give them a sense of purpose. Recognition can be one intangible benefit of volunteering.…
