Why I Want To Teach Subtraction

I am a proud babysitter of two. One night my second grader handed over a worksheet with a really nervous and fearful expression on. After turning over the worksheet, the same fear started to creep up on me. Subtraction. How do you even teach subtraction to a seven year old who just learn how to add? I did not want to let her down, so I automatically started showing her some simple examples. But, the look of confusion still remain on her face and it suddenly hit me. She is a storylover. So I decided to created subtraction stories,with numbers as characters. Automatically, you can see her light up and before long she didn't even want my assistance anymore. I believe that because each child learn differently, a textbook can not capture all the differences there are and so it is important for me to have first hand experiences. The Steinhardt school goes above and beyond when it comes to opportunities for students to work directly in New York City Schools as student teachers. Another great opportunity specifically cater to the Steinhardt school is there study abroad program. Instead of having the typical study abroad program where students take classes abroad, the Steinhardt school also provide Childhood and Special Education major students to observe classrooms in action in British and Ghanaian schools. Through weekly observation, I am bound to discover more creative approach to educate children in all types of learning ability and witness some challenges childrens might have, which will teach me how to approach them to my own students in the future. Overall, NYU have an abundant of resources and the perfect environment for me to become the best teacher I can be and accomplish my mission of helping the future generation to think
