Why I Want To Take Pilates

My number one reason for taking DCE 118 is to maximize flexibility and control breathing. After starting to mediate on my own last semester, I thought taking Pilate/yoga could only help achieve the level of success I wanted in mediation. Being that I am a Health Science major this is my first fitness class, which requires much more than mental work. While your mental state supports in accomplishing the moves, it will take more of the physical side to really push myself. Pilates is an activity that involves mind-body exercise to look and feel the best I can. My life without Pilates consist of constant anxiety and tension held in my back/spine. Joseph Pilates had a very interesting life, starting off a sick child who suffered from asthma, rickets, and rhumatic fever he dedicated his life to becoming healthier and becoming more physically strong. I think that part of him is very admirable. I myself have asthma and fibromyalgia and thats enough to make excercize difficult for me, i cant imagine having rickets aswell which wouldve made his bones very fragile and easily breakable from the lack of vitamin D. I also thought that it was interesting that during his internment of world war 1 he taught people self defense and wrestling and that thats how he discovered his love for teaching. He lived a long life of 83 years considering how sick he was as a child and the fact that he was interned…

This is another item that has a double meaning. First being that yoga itself has taken my baseball career and my body in general in a different direction than where it was going. I have been able to sleep, walk and move in general so much better than before just from simply taking one hour a day or so to just spend time on the one body you get. The second being that I spend a lot of time meditating on many thoughts and situations in my life. I believe that mediation gives you the needed time to process everything that is going on in your life both good and bad teaches you to focus on the positive inspiring thoughts.…

There is a saying that I heard long ago that has impacted my life in more ways than one. “Everyone has a sad story”, but the difference between myself and others is that I did not let it crush me, I let it inspire me. A few years ago when I wasn’t sure what sport to pursue, my father introduced me to CrossFit. CrossFit is a form of physical training that uses intense cardiovascular movements blended with Olympic weightlifting maneuvers for a total body work out.…

This class has helped me a lot with handling my procrastination habits. I learned a lot more in here than anywhere else because we actually had a clear view about everything. I still believe that everything in this class is good as it is and I would not change anything about it. The pace we use to work in this class is pretty fast but I think that is the best way to keep out minds focused on task.…

The area in Kinesiology that interests me the most is, Physical Therapy. There are many reasons to why i chose this profession, but my injuries, the support from my family and friends, and the adequate amount of schooling that it takes in order to become a Physical Therapist have to be the main reasons. Other than that, it also helps knowing that this profession is becoming so high in demand because of the ‘fitness boom’, and also the income of a Physical Therapist especially in San Francisco is very reassuring as well. Since i’ve been 12 years old i’ve wanted to be a Pediatrician, i wrote about it in all my school projects and even drew pictures of myself dressed in scrubs with the label “Dr. Rashidi” underneath it.…

One day I aspire to be a physical therapist for dancers. It is not a typical career college freshman consider but it combines my passion for dance and helping people (without viewing bodily fluids). I have been dancing since I was five years old and will be entering Umass Amherst this fall as a dance major. Although I vehemently protested majoring in dance for years and fought the notion of being a 'starving artist', the truth of the matter is I can not live without dance in my life.…

College Success Skills-Reflections Journal #1 One of the ways that I have always “locked on” to the incorrect information that I believe has resulted in me not being as successful as could have been up to this point is that I have “test anxiety”. I can know the material inside and out and still sit down to take the test and I go completely blank. After beginning this course I am learning how to take a deep breath and am able to give myself positive “self-talk” and I have completely shocked myself as to how much it has worked. I may not be a straight A student, but I feel I have come a long way and for once I feel like I am getting this problem under control and can and will be successful in my endeavor here at college and in anything else in my life that I may attempt.…
