Why I Want To Pursue My Low GPA

I am writing to petition the ability to graduate from the Engineering Management Graduate program with a 2.942 GPA. I am aware that the GPA requirement for graduation is a 3.00, but I would like you to take my petition into consideration. My low GPA does not adequately reflect my passion for higher education or my desire to success in my career field as an engineer.

Not only was I dealing with my mother being sick

In considering my lifetime goals, I have to discuss my past experiences in order for the Admission Committee to have insight into my journey to achieve academic excellence with the ultimate goal of becoming a part of the medical community. As far as I can remember, I always wanted to be part of the medical community; I believe that this quest started from my mother’s womb. The reason for this statement is because my mother experienced two great losses during her pregnancy with me; the loss of her sister who passed away after a short-term battle with cancer, and the loss of her best friend to a fatal gunshot wound due to a long-term battle with domestic violence. I genuinely believe I felt my mother’s heartache and pain within during these difficult moments in her life. Even though such heartache and pain plagued my mother, she tells me that I was the gift she needed to survive these moments.…

It was the winter of my 7th-grade year, a time when so much was already changing. But never have I changed more than in the months after my mother's cancer diagnosis. It was technically Stage 3b breast cancer, and from what I could understand, a very fast growing variety. She went through chemo treatments, then radiation, and was constantly either sleeping or sick from all the treatments. Watching her suffer was devastating.…

It was a cold, dark day in Utica, New York. The sky was a gloomy grey color and there was no sunshine to be seen for miles around. My mother and I were going to visit my grandmother for the third time that week. As we walked in the hospital, the scents of freshly brewed coffee and old flowers hit us like a brick wall. The inside of this building had become so familiar over the past two months, it did not come to shock anymore when an older woman ran screaming by, or a small child was crying because they had broken an arm or leg.…

“I don’t know” I can still distinctly recall my eleven-year-old self repeatedly saying to anyone who tried to talk to me. It was my first day of school in America and that was the only sentence I could put together in English. I was born in China and lived there my whole life until my mother decided to move to New York. I thought I was just visiting her for winter break, but she dropped me off at school just a week after my arrival. As my new classmates tried to talk to me, I can see their mouth moving but they might as well be speaking gibberish.…

My intimate relationship with cancer has directly shaped my academic, professional, and personal aspirations. When I was six years old, I lost my 63-year-old grandmother to breast cancer, despite her relentless 10-year fight against the disease. At age 11, my grandfather, who had already overcome testicular cancer earlier in life, passed away from non-small cell lung cancer that riddled his body after only three weeks. Then, when I was 15, I lost my 41-year-old aunt to colon cancer. Not only do these personal experiences motivate me to persevere when my academic, professional, and personal commitments become overwhelming, but they have also defined my goals as both a researcher and made me a strong proponent of translational research.…

My Motivation: What motivates me the most to pursue a college degree is that I will be the first person in my family to receive one. My grandmother is the backbone behind this motivation because she was always making sure that academics came first in my life. There was rarely a day that I would come home and she would not ask me questions about my homework, asking what I learned in school, or even looked over my homework. As I got older, she made sure I was a part of a college prep program called AVID from 6th-12th grade and that definitely made a difference for me. It helped me understand the importance of continuing your education and how beneficial it can be to succeeding in life.…
