Growing up in an Indian family, where studying and getting good grades were very important, it was not unnatural for me to compare myself to others. In high school, it motivated me and pushed me to do better. However, I did not realize the dangers of this mindset until college, where all pre-med students were competitive. This thought process that had helped me in high school actually hindered me in college; it made me feel like I was not good enough to continue in my career path. It was hard to tell myself that grades were not the only things that mattered.
