Another family I have discovered is the family of music. The strongest music community I have found is my orchestra family at my high school, but the foundation for my playing the violin started many years before then. I began playing the violin when I was six years old and was very fortunate to be able to take private lessons with a professional violin teacher. I have been able to experience a variety of cultures and lifestyles because of the chances for international travel. During my sophomore year I was able to travel to Germany as a part of an exchange program with my high school orchestra. While there we were able to experience Germany’s culture and lifestyle. We stayed with host families and played our music in historic cathedrals and churches. Sharing and playing our music in Speyer, a 900 year old cathedral, was a once in a lifetime experience. I didn’t realize how unique the opportunity was until I was there playing in one of Germany’s most famous cathedrals. The students from Germany shared their love for music with us and it brought two high schools from different backgrounds together.
