Why I Want To Pursue A STEM Degree

The subjects which I have chosen to continue at A level, are subjects which I find both stimulating and enjoyable. I have always wanted to study maths and science, over the arts, as I find that this appeals to the logical side of my mind. In general, STEM subjects come more naturally to me, and therefore, I would like to study Maths, Further Maths, Chemistry, and Physics in sixth-form, also believing that they will also be vital for the science-related job I would like to find in the future. In addition, it is a longstanding aspiration of mine to study at Cambridge University, which is a reason why I would like to attend Pate’s Sixth Form, as I believe that it will provide the optimum environment for me to work diligently to achieve what I …show more content…
For example, I have passionately enjoyed reading from a young age, therefore prompting me to continue English Literature after GCSEs, due to my reluctance to discontinue the subject. Other interests include the violin and piano, which play a large part in my personal recreation at home. I take pleasure in participating in both school musical groups, such as the orchestra, and string quartet, and also outside organisations like Gloucestershire Youth Orchestra, as it is a chance to interact with other young musicians who share common interests and an understanding through music. Similarly, I have taken part in the South West Youth Orchestra summer program for two years, as it gives me a chance to work together with highly skilled tutors from all around the region, as well as very talented instrumentalists.
Last summer, I undertook a week of work experience at the prominent oil service company Schlumberger, where I worked with a group of three for 3 hours each day, to complete a project. In addition, we were given tours of different sections of the company each day, and educational presentations which informed me about what it was like in a professional environment. I found the experience highly entertaining, and encouraging as I wish to pursue a job in the future that work with STEM

Apart from being a naturally talented singer, listening to music is something that always puts a smile on my face. Since I was young, I had always had an undying interest in music. Though certain genres of music don’t necessarily appeal to me, i.e. rap, the general existence of music makes me happy. Writing music isn’t my strong suit, nor is playing musical instruments; I am self-taught in piano. I had been in school choirs from sixth to twelfth grade.…

The most important activity that I have participated in during high school was marching band. Marching band has been the program that I have been dedicated to the longest. It has taught me necessary values and life skills, such as time management, discipline, and camaraderie. Rehearsing two to three hours everyday after school forces a student to learn how to manage their time. From July through November, a large amount of time is consumed by rehearsals, football games, and competitions.…

I would like to participate in the BOLD summer camp because in my biology class this school year my class and I learned about cancer cells, and I want to learn more about cancer because I find the subject of cancer very fascinating. I joined the Chorus and the Vocal Ensemble at the high school and continued to try and better myself as a musician. My music department also offered me other musical opportunities such as festivals. I have attended several festivals such as the Lakes Region music festival and the All New England music festival. Every time I perform at one of these festivals I am overwhelmed by how beautiful music can be when everyone I am working with is just as passionate as I am about the work we are doing and also extremely talented.…

I have a deep rooted love for classic literature and a passion for acting and performance, especially Shakespearian theatre. I believe both literature and theatre are essential for humanity’s growth and evolution, as they provide an inspiration to others and allow us to think and express our feelings about current situations. Studying specific texts in Literature such as ‘Hamlet’ and ‘Wuthering Heights’ has developed my skills in analysing and interpreting texts including character, a skill that has and will come in useful when performing from scripts. I find Literature fascinating and enjoyable, as every individual has a variety of different views on a story.…

On the contrary, I can imagine people would advocate that STEM is an overall better program. Around 2013, NASA and astronaut Patrick Forrester teamed up with Clemson University’s College of Health Education and Human Development (HEHD) to promote STEM teaching and learning in the Upstate South Carolina community. Forrester believes integrative STEM education can inspire learners to obtain a deeper knowledge of the subjects and motivate them to do quality work. He also brought up what he envisioned for the future when he said, “I believe the answer to this type of learning is to implement a fully-functional integrative STEM or Engineering Lab in the elementary school environment: a "garage" at school.” To Forrester, a STEM lab garage would…

Adnan Basic Fareed Zakaria’s article is all about STEM Education, and how it could be hurting the American education system. STEM education is the belief that students should primarily focus on four mains topics in school if they want the best chance to succeed later in life.
