Why I Want To Pursue A Pre-Medical Degree

Improved Essays
At the University of Rhode Island I have had the pleasure of working in a pharmacology and toxicology lab for a year with Dr. Angela Slitt. My original plan coming into the university was to pursue a pre-medical degree that I would then turn to a medical degree. However, now that I have had the experience to take courses as well as my experience in Dr. Slitt’s lab I now know that a career in pharmaceutical sciences in right for me. The thrill of obtaining pertinent data to a proposed theory is the driving force for my enthusiasm.
My first semester as an undergraduate research assistant at URI I was put directly into an ongoing mouse study. This first semester gave me the experience I would later need in mouse handling and tissue extraction. At first I was unsure if the field was right for me but

After cutting new liver samples for myself to purify I began to start the related assay. At first the process was slow as I was double and triple checking every move I made to make sure the process was correct because now I was on my own. It was the best feeling to my first gel created alone to reflect my hard work I had put into the process. It seemed as if everything I had worked for had paid off and my new lab skills were coming into play. I later used this RNA, along with other undergraduates in the lab to make cDNA and later take our first swing at running qPCR to look for the genes expressed in the sample. Our first attempt at this process was a miss and the data was poor. After a few tries we had a successful run. Eventually, I took an attempt all on my own at qPCR, which ended with a great reading. This success showed me why I loved the research field. It showed that I could get pertinent data with such sensitive materials, and that I could personally see that the field was right for me. Now my confidence was growing in my lab skills and I was ready to lead a mouse

My career was taking off as I was the youngest person to be hired by The Remedium Institute. For the first years of my career, I worked with a team of scientists on cancer research. We worked crazy hours. After countless nights of no-sleep, my team discovered a medicine that cured the cancer in rodents. We were days away from a cure in humans.…

As I careened along the course for my first ever practice, I was struck with how unusual it was for me to do something so daring. Usually very cautious, I had only been asked to join Buggy a week prior, and there I was, lying only a few inches off of the ground in a motorless buggy, with my hands in front of me to steer. Peering through the windshield with an assortment of protective gear, I watched the track zoom by at 25 miles per hour. Buggy is a sport unique to Carnegie Mellon University, where students from all majors join to build and compete buggies. Looking back, there are many parallels between my experience with the sport, and the development of my career aspirations.…

There are many careers or occupations that require the knowledge and use of genetics. Among these are virologists and pharmacologists. A virologist is a person who studies virology, which is “the study of virus and virus-like agents, including (but not limited to) their taxonomy, disease-producing properties, cultivation and genetics” (Mestrovic, 2015, para. 1). I could say that a day in the life of a virologist would start in his/her office, which is the laboratory, where he/she would perform tests and studies on different viruses that infect or affect not only humans but also animals and plants.…

We are sex segregated into jobs from childhood to adulthood because at an early age we are encouraged by other people to choose a career that we can do. For example, when I was younger people would ask me what I wanted to be when I was older and I would always say a doctor. Their response would always be the similar “well that’s going to be quite the challenge.” I never knew if that was because it would be a lot of schooling and a lot of work or if it was because there wasn’t a lot of women in this profession. According to the reading “Women were 6 percent of those getting MDs in 1960, 23 percent in 1980, 43 percent in 2000, and 49 percent in 2007 (Paula England 346).…

Personal Statement "How can I help?" is a simple question that we normally either dismiss or greet with lukewarm enthusiasm. In this question though, rests a core intention of trying to be part of the solution. It may not seem important, but the simplest of ideas, motivations or questions can begin most journeys, which is true in my case. I remember that as a young child of around 4 years old, I would sit on the counter next to the medicine cabinet and read the back of all the medicine bottles. My adolescent mind was just barely able to sound out the words on those bottles: acetaminophen, diphenhydramine, and dextromethorphan.…

I’ve tried to come up with alternative ways to explain why I want to become a physician’s assistant, but I just cannot find the words if it’s not the truth. This is a difficult essay for me to write because no one else knows this story besides my husband and to explain myself efficiently I need to start from the beginning. My mother only attended college for a short period until she met my father, got married and had two children. She never went back to school or found a career because my father always took care of her financially until 19 years later. Long story short, their marriage ended up not lasting for many reasons.…

Science has always been one of my favorite subjects in school, especially biology, chemistry, or anything life-related. From elementary school up to high school, I avidly read science textbooks or articles to understand how cells and other molecular building blocks brought organisms to life and new discoveries unknown to me involving evolutionary existence. Reading about chemical reactions in the body and the functions possible because of these occurrences introduced me to my interest in medicine, despite the slight differences of biology, chemistry, and physiology. Prescription drugs use chemicals and can affect organisms like humans in a multitude of positive and negative prospects when mixed together or altered. Becoming knowledgeable about the differential ways they react within the human body will help in assisting people recognize medicine that is suitable for them and can impact their productivity and overall well-being.…

A wide variety of experiences have molded my character and who I envision myself to be as a health care professional. First, I was raised in a household that holds honesty, integrity, and respect to high standards. As a result, I grew up remembering to always be mindful of others and that even the seemingly worst consequences of honesty will always be better than the consequences of dishonesty. Also, many shadowing experiences have strengthened these virtues. Observing and getting to know physicians with excellent morals and practices has helped me decipher what type of qualities I wish to obtain as a professional in the healthcare field.…

I want to become a physician-scientist because I want to work at the interface between basic science research, which has the power to elucidate new knowledge, and clinical medicine, which has the ability to translate scientific discoveries to a deliverable form that can directly help the patients in need. For three years, I studied the role of tumor microenvironment on breast cancer metastasis in Dr. Semenza’s laboratory at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. As I studied the role of Hypoxia-inducible factor on integrin expression and subsequent cell motility, I learnt that cancer is a multi-faceted disease that consists of a web of multiple biological mechanisms as well as other arenas of science. Having exposed myself to…

During my childhood I remember asking my grandma, why did she have so many and colorful pills by the night table? And she answered, “Because I am sick and dying my little girl and the doctor told me that I need to take them, so I can feel better”. I also remember hearing my aunt telling her that too many pills will not do any good for her health. Since, I was always wondering how could something that helps you get better can also be, at the same time, bad for your health. This confusion ignited my curiosity to learn more about how pills really work in a human body.…
