Why I Want To Pursue A Degree In Music Education

As a teacher, you play a major role in a student’s life, and that role should be positive. Teachers need to really care about the students and their growth. I want to be a role model. With a degree, I will be able to positively affect the lives of even more students than I do now. Going to college will allow me to fulfill my dream of becoming a teacher and helping kids grow through the power of music. Since ninth grade, I have been voluntarily assisting with the beginning, intermediate, and advanced orchestras at Luther Memorial School (LMS). I have been teaching some of these students since ninth grade, and now, I am watching one of them, an eighth grader, move on. The feeling of watching the students grow, both skillfully and personally, and then watching them move on, is incomprehensible. As I watch the students improve, I see their eagerness to continue learning and I see their joy when they understand and learn a new skill. When they complete something or improve on something they have been working on, I see their joy, and it brings me joy. Throughout my musical journey so far, my teachers have given me opportunities and positively influenced my life. I want to do the same. I have seen the effects teachers can have on a student’s growth and future and I want to give back what I have been given. I will accomplish this by giving to my students what my teachers have given to me: time, encouragement, and many opportunities, just to name a few. I am going to continue pursuing my musical career throughout college, and upon graduation, I will continue to help children embark and advance in their own musical
