The true hardship was the distance that it created between myself, my family, and my boyfriend.
As medical students we often feel as if time for our loved ones is now restricted by the demands of our new life. We find ourselves calling home for a brief 10 minutes to hear about things we are no longer apart of, like we once were. For me this has been particularly difficult. During the summer of 2009 before beginning my senior year of high school my grandfather passed away after a lengthy battle with cancer. The demands of being the primary

Due to his job at the Federal Bureau of Prisons in Jonesville, VA it is impossible for him to stay full time with me in Pikeville. His encouragement and support during my time in medical school has kept me going on days when the stress seemed too much.
My ideal core rotation site is Big Stone Gap, VA due to the fact that this site is close to my family, Cory’s family, and Jonesville, VA. Growing up in Southwest Virginia has provided me with many opportunities and it is where I will always call home. This area has given me so much and it is my desire to give back. Thus, I hope to one day practice in the surrounding area.

For as long as I can remember, I have wanted to attend North Dakota State University. My dad and sister are NDSU alumni, so furthering my education where they did provides us with a unique bond. Additionally, not many of my relatives attended college, allowing me to see the difficulties in providing for oneself and family without a college degree. Although I know the next seven years are going to be challenging, extremely strenuous, and will push me to the edge of my comfort zone, the satisfaction of administering medical services to those who need them will make it worthwhile. Not only will I be able to care for others with a Pharm.…

My journey from being a new immigrant in 2012, to a medical school applicant in 2017 has not been an easy one. Early on, I faced challenges in the classroom and social settings, as it was difficult for me to communicate clearly, due to my accent which was profound initially, and which people made fun of. Therefore, this caused me to work harder to prove myself and earn respect for my accomplishments, regardless of my background. However, the greatest difficulty I have had to face, was the death of my brother in 2014. This was challenging for me, because he was one of my greatest moral supports, a father figure for me, while we were growing up in Nigeria.…

“I don’t know” I can still distinctly recall my eleven-year-old self repeatedly saying to anyone who tried to talk to me. It was my first day of school in America and that was the only sentence I could put together in English. I was born in China and lived there my whole life until my mother decided to move to New York. I thought I was just visiting her for winter break, but she dropped me off at school just a week after my arrival. As my new classmates tried to talk to me, I can see their mouth moving but they might as well be speaking gibberish.…

As a firm believer of the original Murphy’s law, I suppose I should have seen it coming. “If something bad can happen, it will happen,” and I find this phenomenon to be awfully accurate. For the first decade of my life, my parents were healthy, my sisters were carefree and our daily routine was peaceful and rather uneventful. Things were going suspiciously well for my family, until tragedy transpired and reality struck us across the face. The day my father revealed his diagnosis was the day time stopped in it’s tracks and my childhood began to gradually shift into adulthood.…
