Why I Want To Pursue A Career In Physical Therapy

One day I aspire to be a physical therapist for dancers. It is not a typical career college freshman consider but it combines my passion for dance and helping people (without viewing bodily fluids). I have been dancing since I was five years old and will be entering Umass Amherst this fall as a dance major. Although I vehemently protested majoring in dance for years and fought the notion of being a 'starving artist', the truth of the matter is I can not live without dance in my life. I finally accepted that I would apply to colleges in the fall of 2014 as a dance major in the spring of 2014. I then faced the delema that I did not want to be a performer or a studio owner. The idea of becomming a physical therapist who specialized in dancers was presented to me when I accidentally broke my foot mid-performance during the spring of my junior year of high school. I wore a boot for most of the summer, and attended physical therapy regularly. The physical therapist I met with was phenominal, she specialized in dancers and gave me information a regular physical therapist would not have. For example, how many releves on each foot I would need to be able to do before returning to pointe work, and explaining the different tendons in my foot and supportive taping to prevent common injuries. …show more content…
In order to get into a strong dance program you must audition, if you are accepted, at Umass Amherst you will automatically enter as a BFA Dance Major because they do not have a minor. In order to do both dance (my passion) and kinesiology (my future), I will have to double
