Why I Want To Pursue A Career As A Mentor

My desire to help others has been part of my personality since I was young. Whether it is helping someone move, bucking hay for a neighbor or volunteering at our local ski area, I naturally look for ways to be of service. I have been known to drop everything in order to lend a hand. I believe this trait stems from growing up on a farm. It takes caring and hard work to run an apple orchard and my parents taught me early on the value of a job well done and the desire to do things right. One way I am being of service to others is through my involvement in a program called Academic Success at Chelan High School. This class is a mentorship class where upper classmen are paired with freshmen who have a difficult time finding motivation to be successful in academics or are lacking study skills. My job as a mentor is to help the students understand the benefit of caring about grades and the future. In order to do this I have become certified as a Why Try trainer. One on my mentees has faced an extremely difficult life in regard to poverty, drugs and abuse. Needless to say his motivation and self-esteem are very low. Through the Academic …show more content…
Due to financial situations his family has been unable to purchase a home. Therefore, they are relying on inexpensive rental housing in order to have a place to live. Unfortunately, that is something that is very scarce in the Chelan valley and they are often asked to vacate their home. Over the years I have hauled my dad’s flatbed trailer and helped them move from Orondo to Manson to Brewster to Mansfield. Each time I help them I realize my fortune to have a stable home. Although my friend must move every few months, the family remains positive and appreciative of what they have. Needless to say, I have been impacted by their attitude of gratefulness and learned never to take anything for

Prosocial behavior and altruism are two topics that are being studied within social psychology to try to understand the motivation behind humans to help those in need. Researchers have made various theories of why some people are more willing to help humans in need than other people and why people choose to help victims when they do. These theories do a great deal of explaining why exactly prosocial behavior and altruism occur when they do with regard to genetics, culture, and many other factors that may influence this behavior, such as race, gender, and similarity of the victim and helper. Naturalistic observational studies have also been made by researchers to learn more behind the cause of this helping behavior and many cases are looked…

Do people really want to help others, or there is always a motive behind pro-social behavior. If helping others takes time and effort and always comes with a cost, materialistic or not, then why do people help? Is every action people engage in, a selfish one, or do they sometimes help others just for the sake of helping? Social psychologists disagree on why people help and since there is evidence for both opinions the debate is still continuing. Prosocial behavior is defined as “actions by individuals that help others (often, with no immediate benefit to the helper)”…
