Why I Want To Pursue A Career As A Professional Nurse

Improved Essays
I want a career that is interesting, challenging and rewarding where I can make a positive difference to people’s lives, which is why I have chosen to follow a career path in adult nursing.
I came to this decision during work experience in my local hospital pathology lab where I had the opportunity to broaden my knowledge and see at first-hand how analysis in the lab underpins the work of healthcare professionals. I was able to witness the commitment and composure of the blood transfusion technicians during an urgent call enabling me to understand the importance of clear communication. This enthused me to become part of a team involved in aiding a patient’s recovery. Engaging in the hospital environment has highlighted that working collaboratively is pivotal to the functioning of the hospital, emphasising that every member of staff

Through volunteering in a residential home I have found the importance of care and compassion in building relationships with older people by providing reassurance and support. Through witnessing a colleague’s interaction with residents I am developing the language of compassion and appreciating the importance of respect, privacy and dignity of not only residents but family members. I feel privileged listening to patients talk about their lives and families and am pleased that they feel comfortable sharing their experiences with me. I have gained an understanding of empathy in establishing caring relationships with people in my care. I am also shadowing a district nurse in a GP practice, which has given me a considerable insight into the day to day challenges faced by the nursing profession. It has made me aware of the constant need to keep up to date with knowledge and skills, to work as a team and seek assistance when necessary to ensure that a robust service is given. I witnessed how the core values of the NHS constitution underpin the outstanding service that nurses

This essay has discussed and critically debated the leadership role of the registered nurse in delivering quality and safe nursing care by focusing on essential leadership skills such as effective communication, patient centred care and continuous professional development. Effective communication when working positively provides the patient and their team of nurses and doctors to all be involved in the care and all have a level of understanding of expectations, wants and needs. When effective communication is not being used successfully, patients and family members may feel they are only communicated with when something really terrible is happening or they might be too afraid to ask questions. Patient centred care when working positively also allows the patient to feel part of the team, part of the decision making process, and this can be seen with the implementation of bedside handovers. Poor communication and working in unfamiliar settings/wards are both negative factors which decrease the likelihood of patient centred care being delivered effectively.…
