Why I Want To Participate In The Study Abroad Program

Improved Essays
Growing up in a multi-cultural, socializing and learning about people of different cultures has always been an important value in my life. Participating in this Study Abroad Program would improve my knowledge on Latino culture, language, and values of Madrid. I am currently a Women’s Studies/Anthropology major and this would not only benefit me now, but also in the future as a lawyer. Unfortunately, working at Publix and being a full-time student has become a rigorous experience. The pay I receive from working fifteen hours per week is not able to cover my tuition, financial needs, or cost for the Study Abroad program. It has been very difficult for me to purchase school utilities and textbooks for my everyday need. As a result, I was able to graduate with an Associate’s Degree with four years, rather than two years in comparison to a more financially stable college student. The value of an education, especially from a prodigious University like Florida Atlantic University (FAU) has always been my priority.

As a first generation undocumented college student there is great privilege and pride in attending the University of California, Santa Barbara. However with that there is also many obstacles and struggles that I have faced in order to survive and thrive in this institution, one of them is my need for financial aid. Coming from a low-income, single mother household I do not rely on my mother for financial support because I already know she struggles to feed my siblings and pay their bills. As a result I am sending my mother money on a monthly basis in order for her to complete rent for the month and afford groceries. Due to the fact that I am constantly sending my mother and household money in order to contribute to their survival, I have been working two part-time jobs while still being a full-time student in order to make my needs to be met as well.…

Imagine a world where furthering an education after high school was simple and obtaining a degree was free. That would be every college student’s dream, right? Unfortunately, today colleges do not just let students walk out clear from any debt. Whether an individual is going to a four-year university or a two-year school, it is going to be rather costly in the end. Before deciding to go to Rowan College at Burlington County, I had hopes of attending a regular four-year school.…

“ If you don’t get a full ride scholarship you cannot go to the college of your choice.” My mother has been telling me that since I was in middle school. I would think to myself how hard can it be to get a full ride. Now I’m a senior in high school with no full ride scholarship even though throughout high school I kept my grades up and I even played basketball in hope of a scout would come to my small charter school and discover my talent but that didn’t happen either.…

I have chosen to apply to the University of Central Florida because it will provide great opportunities out of school and while I’m still in school. Another reason I have chosen to apply is because it is far enough away from home to where I can gain my independence and find who I am without my parents around and because it is close enough to where in the event of an emergency I can still be home fairly quickly. In my life there has been multiple obstacles/bumps in the road in both my academic and personal life. Staring with my academic obstacles, both my elementary and middle school were not the best and left me with many gaps in my education, such as in math and science.…

The more an individual has to compensate to attend a school, then the lower the net benefit will be of attending. The Hamilton Project calculates a four-year degree to cost approximately $54,000. In addition, other recent studies Consumer Financial Protection Bureau has exemplified that repaying college tuition can last up to ten years or more. “After attempting to account for in-state vs. out-of-state tuition, financial aid, graduation rates, years taken to graduate, wage inflation, and selection, nearly to hundred schools on the 2012 list have negative ROIs” (Owen and Sawhill 214). With the rising cost of tuition and indefinite job market, individual’s should consider whether obtaining a bachelor’s degree is essential in today’s…

Today, it is becoming increasingly more competitive when applying for jobs and it is harder to do so without a college education. While applying, and attending, college is already difficult enough, the cost of college is also dramatically increasing, making it harder and harder for lower classes to attend. In many cases, the cost of education is the main decider in whether someone goes to college or not and affects how well, if at all, of an education they receive. In today’s society, many aspects of success are directly affected by the level of education you have received.…
