In 2008 the struggle of not being able to get a stable job because of a lack of college education led my family to move from Florida to Kentucky. These difficulties have made my parents encourage me to further my education by obtaining a college degree. I want to have experience to help my children through their college journey, obtain a nursing degree , and overcome the struggles my parents have endured.

My parents lack of higher education has made my college journey difficult. Throughout high school I have heavily relied on teachers and counselors to get the help I need to start on this pathway. Being the first in my family to go to college has given me no other option but to go to counselors for the help that I need. This in turn caused employees like my dad to lose their jobs. We wouldn’t have to move if my dad could find another job but the lack of a college education made that difficult. This caused my parents to make the decision to move to Kentucky because the cost of living in Kentucky is more cost efficient. Getting a degree at Eastern Kentucky University would help me avoid most of the struggles my parents did while I was growing

“You’re going to want to pinch the mask around your nose,” shouted a hazy figure through the thickening fog, opacifying the lenses of my glasses with each breath. As I squeeze the aluminum frame lining the top of my surgical mask, I can feel my pupils constrict as the bright lights of the operating room flood my vision. For a second I am suspended in a state of sensory overload. I am cold but sweating through the first pair of scrubs I have ever donned. My eyes are following the squiggly lines dancing across various monitors; bleeps and bloops bounce around my ears as the scrub nurse hums the tune playing in the background.…

I seek to join Teach for America for many reasons and three of those reasons are; for one, I want to help make a difference in the lives of students, I want the students that I encounter to know that I care about their education, I want to see them succeed and I want them to know that I have very high expectation of them. Secondly, growing up in a low-income community myself, I can relate to these students. I want my students to know that just because they are currently living in an underserved community, it does not mean…
