Growing up in Hawaii, you're faced with multiple fun opportunities. I grew up on a long narrow road that had many bumps and pot holes up and down the entire road. At the top of the road there was a small grade hill that I would bomb with a skateboard. My house was about three quarters the way down the road.…

My trip would begin with my husband coming home, bursting into my room like someone’s behind him with a chainsaw, waving plane tickets and yelling “Honey grab your things because we’re going to Hawaii”. Before he could say when we were going I’d already made mental notes of who would watch the kids and our family dog King. I didn’t need much time to figure out what to wear or if I needed to pack light or heavy. My mind racing, with ideas of how much fun this is going to be, I jumped up off of the bed and begin packing my luggage as well as the kids’.…

My grandparents grew up in Hawaii and they moved to America in 1938. I remember them telling me that they met in Hawaii and that Hawaii will always be their home. Whenever I go to Mimi (grandma) and Yaya’s (grandpa) house Mimi would show me pictures about the way she lived and Yaya loves telling me stories about how their people lived in Hawaii. Did you know the volcano was made in 1762 and didn’t erupt until 1874. Mimi told me that my father was born in Hawaii but he only lived there for 6 years.…

The Dominican Republic; a place where you can count the opportunities of success with one hand. If you didn’t have a connection to someone in the government, the chances of obtaining a job were improbable; this was common knowledge amongst the people of my country. I was 17 years old when the connotation of “America” changed for me; my father came home with wonderful news: we had been given the opportunity as a family to move to America.…

In March this year, I brought up the idea about going to Costa Rica for our annual summer trip. My family and I had traveled to Europe in the past and experienced the famous tourist sites and cultures. In all of these tourist places, English was widely spoken and it was easy to get around, order food and find our way round. Costa Rica: safe, peaceful, adventurous, and a tourist haven. I envisioned Hawaii with even bigger mountains, more lush forests, coffee and chocolate everywhere, and lots of adventure activities.…
