After attending school for fourteen years, one would think the level of a person’s education is beyond acceptable. For me, that is not the case. Scientists have believed the brain does not fully develop until the age of twenty-five. Continuing to learn in college will not only help me become a teacher, but it help my future students. I currently work in an after school program and help children daily. I have worked with kindergarten and first graders for the past two and a half years, recently being moved to work with troubled kids who need a little more attention than others. I realized it was what I loved. Becoming a teacher is what I have wanted to do since I was young, and by going to college I can achieve this dream. I want to major in elementary education with a sign language endorsement. I chose this because I love teaching the children at the daycare. Sign language has become an important part in my life. Being raised by religious parents, I have been serving our church for many years, even before high school. Each year our church hosts a St. Patrick’s Day celebration with food and games for children. I have helped prepare food and volunteer time to clean tables and operate games for young kids to play. My church has also held blood drives through the American Red Cross. I’ve been donating blood since I found out my grandfather needed heart surgery. After seeing him go through such a traumatic time, I wanted to help people who have their own stories and needed medical help. Since then, I have donated many times. I also volunteered at a program telling the story of Jesus’ birth in a forest. I helped children remove their angel or shepherd costume and served cookies once the story was

I was able to volunteer at a local bank that was sponsoring the Lake Park Elementary School for the holiday season. The school has over 300 underprivileged students between the ages of kindergarten and fifth grade. Most of the students at that school only have one meal per day. Along with other volunteers, I packaged bags that contained candy, toys, toiletries, a blanket, and a pair of athletic shoes. The bags were able to provide the children with goods that we often take for granted.…

Service has always been a big part of my life. I have always been involved in my church’s youth group, the Pioneers of Mary. The Pioneers are always doing acts of service, and I love getting involved to help others. Last Christmas, the group and I went caroling to some lonely elders in a nursing home. I know that my time with the senior citizens gave them some Christmas joy and made them feel very happy.…

The fact that Xaverian gives students the opportunity to give back to their community last quarter of their Senior year (and high school career) is extremely invaluable. I have always enjoyed doing service. It is something that I know helps the people I am serving, but also makes me feel good inside. Helping those around me is a desire that comes natural to me.…

One of the activities I do that is substantial to me is volunteering as a Kettle Host during Winter for the Salvation Army. Through Christmas Kettles, I collect donations from the society to help give back to the less fortunate in our community. What volunteering for the Salvation Army has taught me is that even the smallest effort can make a tremendous impact. When I first started off as a volunteer, I did not feel motivated enough to believe what I was doing would truly have an impact. I had this mindset which led me to believe that the happenings in our community did not concern me, although, I began to have a change of opinion as I kept volunteering.…
