Why I Want To Go To College

As a part of community service as well as the goals I set for myself in the near future, I am going to assist students from my neighborhood in becoming familiar with the process of applying to college, the process of finding money for college, as well as link them with opportunities that will contribute to their resumes. I would need the help of my old high school with providing me with a list of not only students who are academically excelling in their courses and simply need cultivation, but also students who may need other means of establishing what will set them apart from other strong candidates when it comes to college admittance and how financial packages given by schools make you weigh the costs and benefits of the school they choose to attend. …show more content…
Students who were advanced academically were given options such as duel-enrollment at the local community college, and or advanced placement opportunities that gave them a shot as obtaining college credit before graduation. It was very clear who those students were that were in those classes or given those opportunities and it was not the student directly from my town. My community was able to help me to achieve my goals of going to college with small town scholarships to help me with my first year, but that was only because I demanded what I felt I worked for. I want to provide a voice for the passive students who accept the systems of disadvantages we are often put in as people of color. It is important for me to do so because if not me, then who else will? It is nice to say that one of us “made it” to some definition of success, but what will be said of the small town I grew up in ten to twenty years from

After thoroughly reading the Washington Post article regarding racial isolation on campus I realized the lack of supporters for this important cause. Students nationwide have reported a drastic number of discriminatory situations surrounding the acceptance rates for certain minorities. The “affirmative action” bake sale provided by several ethnic students was a humorous way to shed light to a growing problem. The racial discrimination experience wrongfully denies aspiring students based on their race or financial background. As I applied to college recently, I noticed the extremely specified and limited options in relation to racial backgrounds.…

I myself have been a victim of discrimination at school with accordance to social groups at the University of California in Irvine. In my opinion, whites are much more sought after and chosen in Fraternities, and it is unfortunate that there is still so much bigotry in this so called “inclusive” campus. The existence of African American Studies in the university can be interpreted as a hero’s journey. The call to action…

A reason why I would want to go to college would because it would help get me to places I want to be in life such as helping me get a good paying job or th position I would want. Another reason why I want to go to college would also be because I want to see what it is like to attend a college and at least try it out. While in college I hope to work part time to earn some sort of income as well but if I am going to be working it is only going to be a short term job till I earn the degree I would need and land a job as either a preschool or daycare assistant. Studies have highly increased, while wages have increased but not an equitable value to meet a college students’ expenses. In the article, The Reality of Free Community College Tuition, by Fran Cubberley, she presents both pro and con arguments in why it would be beneficial for our current and ongoing high school graduates to receive a free two-year education. Why Go to College? Jiddu Krishnamurti once wrote, “There is no end to education. It is not that you read a book, pass an examination, and finish with education. The whole of life, from that moment you are born to the moment you die, is a process of learning.” People go to college to get a direction for life.…

To do so, I propose creating a network of mentoring programs creating by the Ron Brown Scholar organization, that go out and bridge the gap between African American youth, and academic success. Many may argue this point by stating the old phrase “the road is wide but the path is narrow”, however, I cannot agree with the ideology when I know that students just like myself are given an half rate education just because of where they live, and the tax code that follows. I am first a child of God, and then I am a black man:I know the world of systemic racism that lies ahead for me and everyone with similar skin tones. So how can I sit back and let crony capitalist institutions like the SAT, and ACT which offer 9000 dollar test prep courses that guarantee high scores, prevent my people for excelling? In 2015 alone the average ACT score for black students was 17.1 compared to the national average of 21.…

As a high school senior, the question I am most used to hearing is, “where do you want to go to college,” and my habitual response is the Wharton Undergraduate School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania. But I think that the more apt question is “why do you want to go to college?” Personally, I want to learn. The Wharton motto of “knowledge for action” embodies this desire to learn and use this knowledge to pursue a career in something that engages and interests me. I am an aspiring investment banker and international business executive and am intrigued by mergers and acquisitions, investment banking from an international perspective, and the effect of international events on the global economy and the ensuing effect on corporations.…

Raised by Legends As a child, my bedtime stories were of knights clad in gleaming, black suits who spoke of justice and equality for not only their people but for human beings as a whole. My heroes preached and prayed alongside one another for their stories were stained with the trials and tribulations of all people. As a child, going to college was never an option, but a privilege that should be treated as such. I grew up surrounded by individuals who truly knew what struggle was and understood what harm accompanied being denied the right to an education simply because you were black. After all, there wasn't even a high school in Murphy (where I grew up) that permitted African-Americans to attend until the early seventies.…

When watching the news one can’t help but think that the lethargic you is finally finding their cause but is it all students? The cause that is most prevalent is racial inequality, it is similar to the 1960 when the African American youth were fighting for the right to just go to college. The difference between then and now is what the youth is fighting for, the youth now is fighting for everyone in the campus to treat all African American students with more equality than others.…
