My High School Graduation was ten years ago this last May. So, to say it's been a while is an understatement. However, it's not that I don't remember my high school days it's that I don't really want to remember anything academic about it. My school years were terribly frustrating and very stressful mainly because of my parents. My parents did not care about my education and put it all solely in my hands. As a fourteen-year-old kid this sounded great and the school system had already labeled me as non-college bound since my parents both went into trades (firefighter and paramedic) instead of getting a formal four-year degree. I had to read and research how to listen to teachers and take notes, how to write essays, how to read my text books and how to take responsibility for the fact that my education was up to me. Owning up to this fact has helped me to learn and grow as a person and pass my

“Everybody learns better when they are awake”(Carskadon). This quotation mentioned by Carskadon is true for everyone, whether it is adults, students, or kids. According to the CDC, 5 out of 6 high schools start class session way too early, or else before 8:30 am. With the benefit of school starting later, students would get more sleep, their physical and mental activities would improve dramatically, and their mental state of being would be overall more focused. In high school, I took advantage of AP and honors classes to prepare myself for college because I knew then that college was the key for a better future. I know that I do not want to work a minimum wage job for the rest of my life as my father does, which is precisely why my parents have always encouraged me to do well in my studies. Although school was difficult in terms of time management, learning and applying what I know, and studying, it was all worth the stress and sacrifices because I’ve earned college credit, in turn saving me money. On a particularly sunny morning in Washington, Mr. Charbonnel, sipping on a mug of tea over skype, answered my question regarding his choice in university. He gave me two separate answers to my questions. The first answer being the one he gave to his family and friends, “I wanted to go to school with my sister so I applied to Washington State!”. But after a moment’s chuckle he responded, “The actual reason why I choose Washington State over any other school was that I had procrastinated all first semester, and it was the only school that was actually still taking applicants.”. Having known Mr. Brandon Charbonnel most of my life, once as a teacher now as a friend and a somewhat of a role model, I was satisfied with the second answer he had…
