Why I Want To Feed A Goldfish

Being allowed to adopt pets at a young age was not to claim that I was responsible but rather spoiled. My first month caring for another living being was the most enriching experience in my life. I was taught values that my seven-year-old brain struggled to understand.
Pets are difficult to care for, so most would assume that we begged for this privilege. In reality, my mother was the animal-lover who heard about a local hamster breeder. I wish someone guided us inexperienced hamster owners because we unknowingly brought home a boy-girl pair. My family figured this out when we woke up one morning to find six newborn pups. Sadly, the first two batches from these new parents did not survive. And before I knew it, one of the cute dead pups were placed in a Ziploc bag for show and tell. Was this considered mourning? Perhaps if I had been more sensitive towards the corpse. This

And it naturally became my responsibility to care for the new fish. I learned from experience the importance of researching my pet beforehand. Within the following weeks, I noticed what seemed to be a problem with my feeding tactics. All the goldfish became terribly bloated. The care book I bought wrote: “Feed a goldfish once in the morning and once at night,” so I was frustrated because their incompetence and love for food was making them ugly. Being their only caretaker, I was determined to fix this problem myself. Eventually the fasting days I created affected my involvement for the fish. My short attention span found different activities during days where I did not have to feed. Yet the goldfish were able to adapt my new methods. Months passed and unlike my hamsters, these fish were actually living because of me. It was nice to consider myself a reliable individual for once. However, the tank cracked one evening as my mother was replacing the water. To my horror, the goldfish later passed in their temporary

Heater and Thermometer: These are critical. You need your fish to always be in water that’s at the proper temperature otherwise they could either freeze or overheat to death. The scale of tank that you have will determine the scale of a heater that you need to get. A floating thermometer is best, or one which you can see at a peek.…

Based on “What, of This Goldfish, Would You Wish?”, “American Flag Stands for Tolerance”, and my own experiences, our relationships with others define who we are by revealing of our actions. Etgar Keret, author of “What, of This Goldfish, Would You Wish?”, wrote about Yoni, a young man, making a documentary, knocking on people’s doors asking what they would wish for if they had three wishes. “Hard like that - rapping at his door. Just the way Sergei doesn’t like” (5). As Yoni goes around knocking on people’s doors, he raps at Sergei’s, a russian man, in a way Sergei does not like, disrespecting Sergei’s space.…

While the goal of the goldfish lab was to teach the subject how to jump, this objective was unachieved, resulting in the inability to have our fish learn the trick. This outcome was most likely do to the minimal capacity in the brain of the goldfish, making it hard for the animal to remember how to perform the skill being taught. The fish only has a memory that lasts 3 seconds; however, the task took longer than 3 seconds to complete, resulting in the incapability of performing the jump. Also, the goldfish would not eat the food that was provided, influencing the failure of completing the trick because the fish would not interact with the incentive that was presented. In order to persuade the goldfish to complete the task, the food was going to be constantly raised higher until it located out of the water, in which the fish would have to jump and reach it.…

A myriad of topics were discussed in the Frontline documentary, The Fish on my Plate, as journalist Paul Greenberg began a challenge of eating fish every day for an entire year. Greenberg defined this challenge as a way to better understand how fish are beneficial to diets as well as the environment. As this challenge progressed, Greenberg explored the global consumption of fish, overfishing, aquaculture, and the health benefits found in the consumption of fish. I had a few preconceived notions about the topic before viewing the documentary. Judging from the title, I was able to detect that the film was going to discuss the topic of fish, where it came from, the issue of overfishing, and the chemicals found in the protein due to increasing…

I got started around 1992 and the country was in a recession and there were really no jobs, especially for ex-military. Diving was a passion of mine and this hobby was a passion of mine, so I was able to keep things that others weren’t able to keep and I had special permits from the government to keep things that weren’t typically allowed just to see if we could keep them alive to pull them off of the protect list. Doing so we were able to grow them and propagate them, so many things weren’t touchable became a hobbyist pet.…

A lot about what you say, how you look, and your attitude towards other people can affect or help define who we are. Someone can just look at you and tell that you are a mean or nice person. But are you really? It’s insane how someone’s actions or state of mind can tell a lot about their personality. My view on relationships is, before you judge or assume something about someone, get to know them first.…

Goldfish are susceptible to jumping out of their tanks, due to changes in their environment. Another argument is that goldfish are resilient and adaptable, thus the disorder in their routine is trivial. Children and college students are the two major groups that own these fish. Because of the child’s lack of responsibility and the students schedule, it is easy for the fish to become neglected. The main reasons a fish would engage in behavior such as suicide, is because of a lack of oxygen supply - by not using a filter - or being in continual darkness.…

The fish and its life, which is consistently mentioned throughout the story, is a representation of the family’s unity. The narrator first mentions the fish in a flashback at around the same time that she is reflecting back on her memories of her father and their daily routine. The father is the one who brings in the live fish and dumps it in the sink. This is notable because at this point in the narrative, the family is still seen as a cohesive unit and this parallels with how the fish is still alive. The next point in the narrative where the fish is mentioned is right after certain problems are shown to plague the family, such as the obvious language barrier that separates the parents from their children and the problem of the father and the brother’s conflicting attitudes towards the son’s unwillingness to keep hold of his Malaysian heritage.…

In captivity, fish tanks are relatively under-stimulating compared to environments in the wild. It is thought that this disparity can cause stress or impaired cognitive function for the fish. It is simply recommended by the EU government that fish in captivity have enriched tanks. The fact that there has been little research done to discover potential benefits to enrichment might explain why there are no laws in place. Captive fish are often kept in barren tanks…
