Why I Want To Celebrate My Heritage

Improved Essays
Throughout high school, I have learned numerous lessons, ranging from the significance of honoring my heritage to the importance caring for others. Yet, these lessons are not ideas that can be simply taught, instead, through work and experience, I have come to discover how remarkable they truly are.

One of the most pivotal catalysts in this age of personal growth and discovery was my experience with community service. Volunteering with the Lewiston Auburn Greek Festival exposed me to the unique energy and vitality that lives within culture and heritage. Although I am not personally of Greek descent, the ethnic encounter sparked a greater interest in my own background and the dedication my ancestors displayed in their journeys to the United

Upon my arrival at Commonwealth Honors Academy a mere twelve days ago I was ignorant to the fact that I was going to learn so much in my time spent here, but now I look back and realize that I have gained so much knowledge and I have acquired more details to add to what I knew before arrival. Overall I have learned that most things in life require constant attention and effort to make them truly work and that anyone you come in contact with and create an influence with will then, in turn, make a larger circle of influence that can quickly become bigger than you can ever be. The universal themes that have had the largest impact on me are the themes of Happiness, Friendship, and Sovereignty of Education. It was Aristotle who defined happiness…

Have you ever caught yourself allowing your mind to become an excellent servant but a terrible master? The most valuable lesson that I have learned in my life thus far is the notion that the quality of life that I live is dependent upon the way that I choose to think. The individuals that we are and the individuals we aspire to be are hypothetically supposed to allign; for it is how we think that’ll determine whether or not the person you are now will be the person you aspire to be. Through the analysis of my past, present, and future I will analyze my passion for baseball as a child and how it contributed to how my masculinity was formed, I will analyze David Foster Wallace’s “This is Water” commencement speech and how it has contributed to…

Governor’s School Last summer, I attended governor's school west where three hundred and twenty-five bright and open-minded students from all across North Carolina gathered for five and a half weeks in a college campus setting. To me, this was a big milestone in life that changed me for the better. We left our cozy lives of families and friends to start with a clean slate with strangers we’ve never seen in our lives. At first, we thought of it as a sacrifice of our summer to glamorize our college application, but throughout the program we experienced things that exceeded beyond our expectations.…

There are approximately 397,000 children in foster care in the United States of America currently and I used to be one of them. However, foster had not even been near the forefront of my mind that summer. The summer before I started my first year of high school, I had plenty of anxiety about the tall tale I invented in my own mind that stood before me. Stories about how hard high school were numerous and often regaled on the crowded bus ride home by high schoolers who seemed to have the knowledge of every wise teacher in history combined. which that scared me to death; I had always held my position as a good student who followed the rules of my middle school.…

The minute I stepped foot on the University of Alabama campus I was welcomed by the 40,000 square foot sorority mansions and I knew I was not in Chicago anymore. Based on the sheer size of the organizations, I could already spot the difference between Greek life in the South and Greek life in the North. Southern Greek organizations are larger, more formal, and more financially prosperous than they are in the North. I wasn’t sure what I was getting myself into when I joined Sorority life at Alabama.…

Throughout college, I volunteered with at-risk teens in San Diego’s inner-city who needed guidance, tutoring, and companionship. This program exposed me to the heart of the city. Three weeks in a row, I watched an arrest be made at the doorstep of our building. The resilience and optimism displayed by the students despite these dire circumstances forever changed my perspective on the inner-cities. I mentored a teen battling gangs, poverty, and a brain tumor who never failed to dream of a better future for his entire community.…

With the reckless image of Greek like portrayed by popular movies like Animal House (1978) and The House Bunny (2008) contrasted with the philanthropic image depicted by the hundreds of thousands of dollars raised by Greek organizations, it can be difficult to understand the social norms present within Greek organizations. Conflicting messages presented by mainstream news, movies, and Greek organizations themselves can make Greek life a difficult concept to grasp. Through immersing myself in Greek culture, I hoped to obtain a grasp of the social patterns and customs within Greek organizations at the University of Connecticut, a public university located in Storrs, Connecticut, home to nearly 19,000 undergraduate students. Based on my experience…

There is a saying by Mother Teresa that inspires me, “Be faithful in small things because it is in them that your strength lies.” Instead of immersing in the serious events, I tend to observe minor things and gain lessons from them. Identifying one significant moment in my life that influenced me was not an exception. Instantly being captured in the flow of thoughts about my American Studies class, which I enrolled last semester, I realized that there is no need to look further to see how much I gained from this class. What I obtained was not merely the knowledge and skill the instructor conveyed, but also the alternative way of viewing what happened around me.…

Everyday, thousands of high school students immerse themselves in their community and create satisfaction in helping others in need. Community service is a critical aspect of teen development. Without it, students do not realize how much it means to help others, and they do not get the full experience of working with different people. Volunteerism is required in many high schools around the United States, but not all of them. This issue is incredibly controversial because the debate is whether community service actually helps students in the long run.…

From a young age, I have always been told that I would use my experiences in school to define who I am as a person. Now, halfway done with the most important four years of my education, I think I can honestly look in the mirror and say that I love the person I have become. I am no longer the impressionable young lady that I was when I began school. The person many formally know as Bethenie Katherine Lynne Dasinger has been shaped by an intricate web that has been made up of the many people I have encountered, the academics I have chosen to take, and the extracurricular activities I have been involved in. The most important thing that influenced me in my earlier years of school wasn’t necessarily the classrooms or the teachers, but it was the people I encountered instead.…
