During my high school career, I have been volunteering my time at Cedar Mountain Fire Rescue as a junior firefighter. As a fourteen-year old junior, I could not take classes, participate in all of the firefighting activities, and had more restrictions than a regular firefighter. So for my first year of involvement with the department I was not very active, I only attended trainings on Thursdays and occasionally helped with extra fire department lead events. During those trainings though, I learned from observing what the more experienced firefighters were doing and what they were teaching. Slowly I absorbed some of the basics of firefighting and other duties that the department is responsible for, so when I turned sixteen and was able to participate…

But changing my mind and looking at different options allowed me to gain many experiences and know what I truly wanted to do because I was able to try things that were wrong for me. Like Ronald in the excerpt, I have had to make mistakes and stumble to know what I truly wanted. In the last year, I went back and forth between becoming a nurse or pursuing a career as a pharmacist. Usually, I changed my mind because I doubted my abilities and what I really can accomplish, but I was not content with the unknown of being indecisive. I chose to take the chance and pursue a career as a pharmacist since the possibility of the career excites me and I believe it would allow me to be satisfied with my life.…

Moving schools away from all of my friends should’ve been an appalling experience, surprisingly, it was a blessing in disguise. I went to Agnes Baptist Elementary from kindergarten to 5th grade and I had friends that I've known since I was 3. I loved it there and knew the school like the back of my hand. Everything was superior, like most good things, though there were times where they weren’t, I was harassed by a bully almost everyday, my grades were getting inadequate, and my mom didn’t want me to be a sad, disconsolate 7th grader at a new junior high. In the result, I moved and I went to Savage Middle School, a school that had 6th, 7th, and 8th graders.…

Until I joined the military, which probably wasn’t my easiest decision.…

My mother and father always told me stories of their time in the Pineville High School JROTC, (Junior Reserved Officer Training Corps, a type of military training for highschool students) and no matter how many times I heard them I listened raptly, fully engrossed in their tales of Drill Team competitions and bonds that could never be broken. So, naturally, I joined the JROTC program as soon as I became a freshman at Pineville High. I quickly rose through the ranks of the program until eventually I was elected into the position of Battalion Commander, which was the highest spot a student could obtain. I was completely in charge (after the instructors, of course). I was also commander of the Drill Team, a team that focused on crisp precision and synchronization with military rifles.…

For example we have to wear gear, which consists of bunker pants, jacket, boots, nomex hood, helmet, fire resistant gloves and most importantly an SCBA. SCBA stands for self-controlled breathing apparatus, we wear these so we can breathe going into toxic air like fire smoke or hazardous fumes. Also we need to be able to identify all the tools on the fire engines and make sure the water tank is full for every call. In the beginning of the month we go through apparatus checks to make sure everything is in the right place and working properly. Although having state of the art equipment and education is critical to building a great firefighter, yet there is one thing that surpasses all the others, being smart and…

As an introvert, parties and other social gatherings in general are naturally not my strong suit. My quiet demeanor has been with me for essentially my whole life, but it especially shows when I’m with groups of strangers. I was often hesitant to speak in classes in middle school simply to not bring attention to myself. I’d much prefer to listen and follow orders than participate in class. Participation based grading terrified me.…

Disagreements always have the possibility of causing disturbance and we’d rather not have them. When I’m bickering with someone and I feel it’s an irrelevant argument I always just end with a, “Let’s just agree to disagree,”. A recent decision I made that was disesteemed with my past friend group, was my decision to transfer schools. I made this decision for the sake of my mental health. We were leaning towards moving in the summer. It was a bitter January 4 when I told them that I would not mind moving during the school year, in fact, it would work better.…
