I have known since I was young that I wanted to be bilingual. In the fourth grade, Francisco joined my class. He did not speak English and never made any friends in the class. That year, I decided that I would earn Spanish, so I could be friends with the kids who did not speak English. I have been living that goal.
This past summer a group from my school system went to Honduras as a part of a Sister Schools project. I got to connect with people who are so different than me while speaking a language that I love. But what I learned is this: we have privileges here in the States that people in other places do not have the luxury of having. I went to a school where they taught girls to sew with machines that did not work and they taught the students
