Why I Want To Be An Underserved Community

When I was about eight years old I decided that I wanted to work in the medical field. This may be attributed to watching my grandmother receive medical care frequently for both type I diabetes and kidney failure. We lived in a rural community, and I vividly remember her being flown to a bigger city to receive the emergency care that she needed. As medical treatment become more available in our community my grandma was able to receive the care she needed without having to travel fifty miles or more. From a young age, I saw the need for more medical care in underserved communities. I have a strong desire to serve in a small rural community. Although I have lived in several communities throughout my life I have always found ways to give back to them. A few of my favorites includes being a mentor at a blind camp, working at a food bank, helping at a prom dress drive, and giving flowers to the elderly patients at a nursing home. …show more content…
During that time I had the opportunity to help a nine-year-old girl with activities of daily living. Each day the camp had fun activities planned. These activities included going on zip lines, roller skating, swimming, crafts, and a talent show. Two young boys even successfully rode a tandem bike. Roller skating with four blind adults is one of my fondest memories. Even though I was younger, I learned life lessons that week that are still present in my mind. I would have never thought it was possible for a blind person to do all those things until I was there with them. They taught me that no obstacle is too big to overcome. I learned at that point that you can never judge people and limit their abilities to what you think they are capable of
