What Occupational Therapy Means to Me
Occupational therapy to me is working with people of all ages who need individualized assistance in performing daily activities to lead a more productive and meaningful life. As an occupational therapist assistant, you work with clients who have impairments which are preventing them from leading a normal life. In the role of an occupational therapist assistant you get to work individually with your clients and help them achieve their goals. To me, it’s a rewarding profession where you get to impact someone’s life and rehabilitate them after an injury or illness. Occupation promotes health and well-being by maintaining the mental and physical health of an individual through purposeful tasks that encompass our everyday activities. The main difference in roles between - Occupational therapists (OT) receive a master’s-level education, whereas you can become a certified occupational therapist assistant (COTA) by completing a two-year associate’s degree. Occupational therapists are involved in all the evaluation and setting of goals for clients, and certified occupational assistants are responsible for implementing the therapy with the client. We as COTA`s must also possess the skills to assess the client’s ability to achieve the goals set by the OT, and make adjustments, or recommendations if needed, so that the client can reach their full potential. Every client case is different and must be individualized. Every case should also be viewed as a learning experience that can help you hone your skills as a COTA.
