Salaries for high school teachers with fifteen years of experience and the minimum level of education and training required to be certified exceeded $40,000 in Denmark, Germany, Japan, and the Netherlands and exceeded $60,000 in Switzerland. I personally tell people “you do not understand why people would want to teach, unless you want to teach.” With the low pay, long hours, rude kids and possibly rude parents, and office politics that would make a lawyer’s head spin, why would anyone want to teach? Well, I want to teach to see the look in the eyes of students who finally understand a tough subject, to watch a child overcome personal problems, but most of all, I want to teach to help build the next …show more content…
I moved seven times throughout my whole academic career due to divorce, changing homes, and being relocated due to my parent’s job. I saw many different houses, and with every different house, I saw a different school and many different teachers. If society wants the country’s best and brightest college graduates to see teaching as a desirable career, it’s essential to offer pay incentives high enough to attract the talent we seek—high-performers who might otherwise be drawn to higher paying and better respected professions (Alfuth). The low pay causes teachers to have to work second, even third jobs, in order to support their families. The low pay is the main reason why teachers leave the profession. With salaries beginning at only $39,580 and averaging at $52,965, there’s no wonder why teachers are leaving the profession. In speaking with many teachers, as well as thinking about my own future as a teacher, it is apparent that there is a correlation between feeling valued and receiving an appropriate salary for the hard work that you do.…

While this may be true for many individual teachers and teachers from school districts with lower average salaries, most teachers in the United States make enough money to not only survive, but provide enough money to live comfortably and support a family. According to a poll and survey done on average high school teacher salaries performed by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average salary for a high school teacher in the United States is approximately $55,360 for the middle 80% of teachers (US News). Working in this field is not without its flaws, but it is much more comforting for those who are pursuing the career to know that they would not be throwing away their chance at a higher quality life just by becoming a teacher. Another positive aspect to teaching high school students is that not will a person likely be teaching a class for which they are passionate, but they will be instilling their values onto the children who they teach. Teachers are the people who train kids to be responsible adults who pursue their interests and passions (“Pros and Cons of Being a Teacher”).…
