Why I Want To Be A Social Worker

1. Discuss why you want to be a social worker. What personal, academic, volunteer and/or work experiences have influenced this choice? If you have worked in other fields, please discuss the reasons for this change.
I like to believe that I did not choose the social work profession, in fact, social work chose me. I have always had the passion to work with people and make a difference in the community which confirmed by decision to choose the profession of social work. I grew up in a single parent household with two siblings. For the most part, we had a good childhood and my mother did her best with the resources that were available. I had foster siblings in and out of the house, but there was one particular person who changed my view of life. This person was my younger foster sister who came from a rough background. Her mother was an addict and she was born with drugs in her system that caused complications with her health. She was very angry living with my family and I did not blame her. It took her awhile to get use to our home. I had a bunk bed in my bedroom where she slept. After she warmed up to us, she told me about her life. She told me everything she witnessed and all of the hurt she had. We were like sisters; we fought, argued, and played together. I loved her and still do now. My mother was going to adopt her, but due to challenges that had occurred my mother was unable to. I can honestly say that is the main reason I want to become a social worker. She seemed so happy when she came back from her visits with her caseworker. In fact, her caseworker was the first encounter I had with any type of social worker.
