Why I Want To Be A Recreational Therapist Essay

Finding the perfect career was very stressful. I remember how embarrassing it was when someone would ask me, what I was majoring in and all I could say was that I did not know yet. My counselor always told me that in order to find the right career, I had to figure out what I was good at, as well as, what I loved to do. For me that was more difficult because I love to do so many things. For example, I love to dance, do sports and care for others. At this point I knew what I was good at, but I just did not know what career was for me. Until one day I came across an article about what Recreational Therapist does. In that instant I knew this career was perfect for me, because I am able to teach, inspire and direct people with depression, stress and anxiety. As a Recreational Therapist, I am able to work with different types of patients, which gives me the ability to teach them different ways to cope with their disabilities. For example, distractions, staying active and staying as social as possible are the things we do, in order for them not to fall back to their old habits. Being in the Recreational therapy program, I will direct and plan any leisure’s needed for the patient. I am the person in charge of the activities that the patient will receive that day. First I will have to plan the activity for that specific patient. Then I will direct the entire game in order to teach them how the game is played. After observing and analyzing the performance of the patience I will be able to decide what would be the next activity for the patient. Being an RT has many advantages that I like because, I am able to direct so many activities like dance, games, crafts, or even a day of simply swimming.
