Why I Want To Be A Psychiatrist

Giving back and helping others has been my number one goal in life which also has influenced my career choice as a psychiatrist. My mother always told me that it's okay to do things for others but to make sure it's from the kindness of my heart. I think I have contributed to my community to the best of my ability. I first started wanting to help others once I entered the third grade, so I joined girl scouts. In my group every year we would do a program that helped us give the less fortunate a better Christmas. We all collected a significant amount of toys and boxed them up for those in need. From this experience, I learned that it's not how much you give it's the thought that counts and always be grateful for what you have. I sadly had to leave my troop due to family hardships and moving. …show more content…
My freshman year at Cape Fear High School, I joined the Beta Club and it was really fun. We mainly focused on ways to improve the school like improving parking, having a cleaner environment, conducting more fundraisers and more At the end of the year I decided to move to a different school because I was being bullied, and I joined the National Honors Society at Freedom Christian Academy. While at Freedom Christian we had regular meetings to come up with ways to better others and our school environment. One of our community service projects included going to the Second Harvest Foodbank to help pack boxes and sort them. Other than the foodbank some of the involvement included helping out with the school plays, basketball games, and art exhibits. Sadly I had to leave Freedom because of financial problems and I came to Cumberland Polytechnic High

I have donated time in my city, state, country and internationally. Through the many opportunities that I have had for community service, I have been able to broaden my views, and look outside my community at how others experience our world. I have visited very diverse communities ranging from the inner city of Detroit, MI to a small, economically depressed village in Honduras, to the mountains of Pennsylvania and inside homes very different from mine in my own…

Throughout high school, I have been involved in many activities. I started off with the STEM academy in my high school. In the STEM academy, we held special events that teach people, especially kids, about new experiments and science-related careers. I helped out the STEM academy by explaining people about the experiments, the purpose behind the experiments and cleaned or organized lab equipment. I was a part of the STEM academy for approximately three years in high school and I really enjoyed it because I knew I could make a difference in my community.…

At an early age, my parents drilled into me the golden rule treat others the way you want to be treated. It has been my mantra since, and why my strongest skill is compassion. Compassion is caring about another person's happiness as if it were your own. Compassion focuses itself only on the potential all people have for good, ignoring everything else. Over time, I have improved in this skill by being a Sunday school teacher at my church, and being a peer mentor at my school.…

In society as a whole, community service plays a very important role. Government programs can only go so far in helping the needy. The slack must be picked up by charitable organizations and other community outreach programs, and there is a lot of slack. In the metro Detroit area alone, there are over 25,000 homeless ("State of Homelessness in Michigan 2014") and approximately 700,000 people without adequate access to food in southeast Michigan ("Know More Hunger Facts"). Without great organizations like Gleaners Food Bank, Forgotten Harvest, Detroit Rescue Mission, local churches, and the countless other charities in the area, many of these people would go without a meal or place to sleep at night.…

What have you done to make your school or your community a better place? 370 “With the world so set on tearing itself apart, it don 't seem like such a bad thing to me to want to put a little bit of it back together.” This quote from the recent film Hacksaw Ridge embodies my sentiment that brightening up someone’s day is the best feeling in the world for me. This desire to help others prompted me to volunteer for two years at UCLA hospital to help transport patients. Hospital patients often deal with severe pain and sometimes loneliness, and I knew that giving some of my time could improve their moods and outlooks.…

An elderly woman who got to take part in a high school community service project states, “Many think that volunteering is all about what you give. But what catches you by surprise is how much you receive in return.” This demonstrates why many people do not feel that they should give back because they do not believe the benefits that they can get from it as well. Consequently, when creating that feeling of happiness and satisfaction in someone else’s life, it comes back to the person creating it. Volunteering to help someone get tutored, help the handicapped, involve themselves with a program like Meals on Wheels, certain environmental work, etc., not only does one gain from that, but one’s community has been helped because of them.…

I have found myself in charge of a multitude of projects in my short seventeen years of life. Many of the people whom I have worked with tell me, quite frequently, that my maturity is beyond my years. I usually would not agree with them, but now realize why they would have that impression. I started volunteering at the North Dearborn Food Pantry during my freshman year of high school as a way to spend time with my grandpa, but it evolved over time. When I first began, I only worked two times a week for 8 hours total…

My entire life I have always wanted to do something where I would be remembered positively by many people. I recall always telling myself I was going to become a backup dancer for a famous singer, become a singer myself, or maybe an actress. Better yet, I thought I could have been all three. As I entered middle school, I realized those goals were too surreal to even become the slightest bit possible, mainly since I am located in an area that most people haven’t even heard of. Back then, I was very uncertain about any career goals I have had.…
