Why I Want To Be A Peer Mentor

Decent Essays
Throughout my high school, I always had mentors from teachers to local community leaders to guide me in time management, developing leadership skills, and having a passion for giving back to my community. They were the support that I needed during times, where I felt I could not manage everything anymore. I want to be the same support system that they were for me for another student because I know how important it is to have someone to say, “you got this.” I want to help students to love the world of education as much as I do and learn how great it feels to help someone during their times of need. Mainly, I want to be the anchor for a student that feels overwhelmed and stressed out. I feel as if being a peer mentor will enable me to best help

I would need to be a mentor to those who seek my help but also a mentor to those who do not. More than anything I will need to focus on learning my students so that I can know what they need from me on any given day. Each day, their needs will be different, and the better I know them, the better I can provide them with what they need no matter the mood they are in. Then on days I cannot provide them what they need, I need to educate myself on ways to get them the help they need from others. I need to be a resource for all my students all the…

Additionally, the long lasting success of the program and the school district’s acceptance of the program stands as a testament of the success and strong approval of the program within its schools. I appreciate the program’s ideology of coming together as a community interested in the success of students. The system enables community mentors who are privileged to extend their powers to mentees. I personally appreciate how the program emphasizes to the mentors in training that the program does not expect these adults to radically change the lives of the mentees but to simply ensure they have the same capacity to succeed in life by providing them support. With this comment, Ms. Shilton attempts to eliminate potential savior complexes present in the minds of misguided mentors, and enlightens them to understand the great potential of mentorship on its own, a major step towards active citizenship.…

A mentor is a wise and trusted counselor or teacher. The mentor is a significant figure because he/she helps the hero on his journey by guiding and helping the hero. In The Odyssey, the goddess Athena helps protect and guide Odysseus on his way home from twenty years away for battle and the adventure he had. Athena provides protection when she is with him: “’ Surely I’ll stand beside you, not forget you, not when the day arrives for us to do our work’” (13, 299, 449-450).…

A mentor, someone who teaches or gives help and advice to a less experienced and often younger person, would allow me to utilize past life experiences and the formal education I have received while obtaining my degree. Becoming a mentor to troubled youth would likely be a volunteer position that would coincide with my career as a youth services aide. My hope is to tell my story and lead with the knowledge of the mistakes I’ve made to make an impact on the youth of today. If I am able to reach out and help at least one person while in either of these positions I will have completed the greatest gift to society, and made all of my college study worthwhile. All of the struggles I have been endured and been faced with will finally be without…

An experience that displayed my ability to mentor was during my time helping out at Columbus Elementary School. There was one boy named Presley and he had trouble focusing, so I often ended up at his table trying to draw his attention away from his peers and towards his work. He was struggling with math, subtraction specifically and heavily relied on finger counting to do any problem. After about two weeks doing number lines and tally marks, he greatly improved and no longer needed any help for simpler subtraction.…

I’m interested in becoming a Peer Academic Leader because I have a passion in helping my fellow students succeed. One thing that two years at a community college and three semesters here at UNCG has taught me is that college has its ups and downs, but it really helps if someone is there that can be a guide when things get tough. Being a Peer Academic Leader is an important job because coming to a four-year institution the size of UNCG might be overwhelming to some students, and they might not know what resources they have at their disposal, so as a Peer Academic Leader I would be the person they could come to when they need help navigating around campus, around Greensboro, or help navigating the resources they have available to them. As a transfer…

Building from the national framework set out by CUREE (2005), collaborative (co-)coaching is “a structured, sustained process between two or more professional learners to enable them to embed new knowledge and skills from specialist sources in day-to-day practice.” Purportedly, the main difference with coaching and that of mentoring is how you reach the conclusions of growth with your teaching and learning practice. Schwartz proposes positive thought centres on such things as a belief in your abilities, a positive approach to challenges, and trying to make the most of bad situations. It is true to say that not every day within your teaching career will be as successful as it could be, not every lesson outstanding, and you won’t always have…

My approach for students to gain these opportunities is reflected in the model I have established following support tools for student services by challenging students growth and development by challenging their educational and leadership opportunities. Also by guiding students to commit to their own educational experience, develop their own set of morals and beliefs and establish goals for their future career. Lastly, it is important provide students with community to establish their identity as emerging adults, provide a safe living and learning environment, and a supportive community for growth, development, and self-exploration. I believe that my personal philosophy will continue to adjust and develop as I continuously work with students but it is important to be willing to adjust my approach to Student Affairs as both the field and the students are continuously changing and evolving.…

I originally thought that by just being there for someone you were a mentor. I now know through this program that mentoring involves giving both tools and advice to effectively help your mentee. The relationship with a mentee is somewhat different than a relationship between friends. There is a sort of bond that occurs from helping the student but the student holds you to higher standards than a friend would. I am excited about mentoring next semester because I want to hone my mentoring skills even further be able to help my mentees in a more effective way.…
