Why I Want To Be A Nurse Practitioner

After working as a computer programmer for 13 years, I found myself without a job when I was laid off as jobs were outsourced to countries outside of the United States. I thought it would be relatively easy to find another job, but soon found the market was saturated with new graduates willing to do the same work for less money. I decided to get my CNA license and work in the medical field. I loved working with patients and decided to jump back into school and pursue a degree in nursing. Although there have been nights with little sleep, tears, and many meals of scrambled eggs, grilled cheese, or cold cereal, I have never regretted going back. Nursing is an exciting field that is helping the health community deal with the growing shortage of general practitioners. Prior to becoming a nurse, my grandmother was diagnosed with lung cancer. I remember the empathy, kindness, and compassion the nurses gave to my grandmother and our family. I know I can be a nurse practitioner who provides this same compassion and kindness, and empathy. I want to share education on conditions affecting our communities such as obesity, diabetes, and hypertension. I want to talk about teen pregnancy prevention and avoiding opioid addiction. I want to give my patients realistic exercise programs, and information on how to prepare nutritious meals on any budget. and teach it to their family, who will, in turn, share it with other family members. I believe that being a family nurse practitioner is about educating patients so that they are empowered to take charge of their health and the health of their family. I understand the commitment required and know that I have the skills and dedication to become a family nurse
